AirCare - University of Mississippi Medical Center Aircare is UMMC's critical care aeromedical service. Serving the state of MS out of bases located in Jackson, Meridian, Columbus, and Greenwood.

AirCare is staffed with Critical Care Paramedics and Critical Care Nurses. The University of Mississippi Medical Center's helicopter flight program began operations in 1996 with a single helicopter based in Jackson. The Jackson-based AirCare 1 helicopter was joined by the Meridian-based AirCare 2 helicopter in spring 2009, the Golden Triangle-based AirCare 3 in spring 2016, and the Greenwood-based AirCare 4 in fall 2017. The additional helicopters allowed AirCare to expand its mission profile by transporting patients to not only UMMC, but other hospitals able to provide levels of care required by the patient's illness or injury. Scene response profile has also changed, allowing the transportation of multiple patients from a single location. Since the program's inception, AirCare teams have safely transported over 18,000 adults, pediatric and neonatal patients over 2 million miles without any FAA-reportable accidents. The helicopters are unique to the state of Mississippi in that both are operated under single-pilot Instrument Flight Rules-meaning the pilot may be able to complete flight requests in marginal weather conditions. Both aircraft are outfitted with autopilot systems, color-weather radar systems and anti-collision instruments to increase patient and flight team safety and full heating and air-conditioning systems to ensure patient comfort. Night Vision Goggles are used during all night operations. Medical flight crews consist of dedicated flight nurses and flight paramedics and work closely the UMHC's Newborn Transport Team. 100% of the flight nurses hold a minimum of one specialty distinction such as CCRN, CEN or CFRN. The flight paramedics also hold advanced distinctions in areas such as Certified Flight Paramedic and Certified Neonatal-Pediatric Transport. Medical personnel have professional backgrounds ranging from over 25-years of EMS experience, Adult and Pediatric ICU experience and Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department Experience. Two units of O-negative blood are carried aboard all AirCare aircraft. Additional medical capabilities include the initiation and maintenance of peripheral arterial lines, RSI, and capnography monitoring of all intubated patients. Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) bedside ultrasound exam can be done on all trauma patients in flight.

This year our AirCare, Emergency Medicine, and Trauma Surgery staff were honored to train 178 clinicians from several states in a procedural cadavar lab at the combined MEMS and State Trauma conference in Biloxi. Many of those same lab instructors were also presenters in several lectures. We are always excited to fulfill one of UMMC’s core values; Education. Thanks to the MEMS board for their hard work organizing what we feel was the best conference thus far. We look forward to future opportunities to share the knowledge of our incredible staff with our great Mississippi and surrounding states clinicians.

Robert is one of the many voices Behind the Mic in Med-Com. He along with the Med-Com team coordinate patient movement across the UMMC hospital system and Mississippi everyday. From ED and inpatient transfers to EMS reports and coordinating critical care transport teams across our region, Robert and the Med-Com team get to make a huge difference in patient outcomes.

Robert was nominated by his fellow team members and partner departments as he continues to go above and beyond for his patients and our teams here at MCES. Thank you Robert!

Our own Ally Westrope was presented the Spirit of 911 award recently after the 9/11 stair climb. Ally came to our program during a tragic time in our programs history. The Spirit of 911 award is presented to those who continue to take the call. She was nominated by her base supervisor Don Moore. Congrats Ally!

Congrats to our own Michael David on being awarded the Jim Spruiell excellence in leadership award.

Today is an exciting day for UMMC AirCare and the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services as we celebrate the launch of AirCare 5, our new fixed-wing critical care transport program.

For more than 30 years, AirCare has worked alongside EMS agencies, hospitals, first responders and health care professionals across Mississippi to bring advanced critical care closer to the patients who need it.

Today, that mission grows.

AirCare 5 expands our reach beyond the capabilities of our helicopter fleet, giving our teams another tool to connect critically ill and injured patients with the specialized care they need across Mississippi and beyond.

This program represents months of planning, preparation, training and teamwork by an incredible group of people. From our clinical crews and aviation partners to communications, logistics, education, medical leadership and the many teams behind the scenes, countless hands helped bring AirCare 5 from an idea to an operational aircraft.

We are especially grateful for the continued support of our EMS, hospital and community partners throughout Mississippi. AirCare has always been about more than an aircraft. It is about bringing critical care to the patient and working together to ensure Mississippians have access to the right care, at the right place, at the right time.

You may have seen AirCare 5 featured in local news coverage today. We are proud to share this milestone with the communities we serve and even more excited about what this new capability means for patient care.

Four helicopters. One fixed-wing aircraft. One mission.

Bringing the advanced care of Mississippi’s academic medical center to patients when and where they need it.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s AirCare officially launched its new fixed-wing service.

Today we celebrating our therapy dog, Aero, whose wagging tail, gentle spirit, and unconditional support make a meaningful difference in the lives of first responders.
Some days, the best medicine comes with four paws and a wet nose.
Thank you, Aero, for all you do! 🐾
