Energy Conservation Works We work in partnership with a wide spectrum of organizations to implement and advocate for energy conservation and emissions reduction in Jackson Hole.

In 2009, former World Bank President James Wolfensohn inspired our community leaders, including former Mayor Mark Barron, to transform Jackson Hole in to a leader in energy conservation and use our special history and landscape to share the message, encouraging people around the world to act. Leaders from the Town of Jackson, Teton County, and Lower Valley Energy created Energy Conservation Works, a joint powers board with board members from each of the three entities, as well as citizen board members, with the goal of achieving significant energy conservation and reducing our carbon footprint. That mission remains today.

Today is National Energy Efficiency Day, and it has us thinking about what there is to celebrate.

We love celebrating the wins: people and businesses saving money and cutting energy use through smart choices, good information, and cool technology.

But what inspires us most is that efficiency is more than the sum of its parts. It grows the clean energy workforce, brings unlikely partners together, protects our incredible ecosystem, and helps make our community more equitable.

A big thank you to the three organizations whose support and expertise make ECW a resource and leader for energy efficiency: Town of Jackson , Teton County, Wyoming & .

Lower Valley Energy's new rate structure starts today, and it changes how your bill works. ⚡

Residential and small commercial members now have a demand charge. It's based on your single highest 15-minute stretch of electricity use in a billing cycle, not just your total kWh. Running the oven, dryer, EV charger, and space heaters all at once can set a high peak and raise your bill, even if your total use stays about the same.
Lower Valley Energy has put together some great resources:

Demand vs. Consumption: What’s the Difference? 💡

Did you know two homes using the exact same amount of electricity in a month can end up with different rate impacts? It all comes down to the difference between consumption (energy used over time) and demand (total power draw at any given moment).

A simple way to see the difference is by looking at two scenarios:

Scenario A: A single 100-watt lightbulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh of energy and creates 0.1 kW of demand.

Scenario B: Ten lightbulbs running for 1 hour also use 1 kWh of total energy, but they create 1 kW of demand because they are all turned on at the same time.

Why It Matters for the Grid

Both examples use the same amount of total energy, but the second example requires more utility infrastructure to instantly supply that higher short-term power.

The electric grid has to be built large enough to handle everyone's peak usage at once—even if those peaks only happen for a brief interval during the month.
Demand charges help your electric cooperative account for higher short-term impacts on the grid, ensuring that the members who create the need for larger infrastructure support its maintenance!

Did you know that running major appliances at the same time—like baking dinner while running the dishwasher and dryer—creates a sharp "demand spike" on the grid?

This is known as stacking.

By simply staggering your appliance use throughout the day, you can help reduce peak demand without changing what you do—just when you do it! ⚡💡

Your building is on the map. 👀
Energy Conservation Works and Wyoming-based Power Theory Inc. have launched a new interactive energy model covering approximately 15,000 buildings across Teton County.

And now you can explore it.

🏠 Find your home or building on the map
⚡ Explore its estimated energy use
💡 See how improvements like insulation, air sealing, or heat pumps could affect its estimated energy performance
✏️ Create an account to add or correct information about your building and help improve the model over time

The Digital Twin is a starting point for understanding how buildings may use energy and where opportunities for improvements could exist.

ECW is a connector.

We help bring families, businesses, and organizations together to build a community that's bright, efficient, and resilient.

Sometimes that looks like comparing LED bulbs with a neighbor. Sometimes it's a local contractor walking someone through a home energy audit. Either way, it's neighbors helping neighbors save energy and money.

Your support helps make the environmental choice the economic choice for more people in Jackson Hole — lower utility bills, more comfortable homes, and a stronger community. Thanks to Old Bill's Match, your gift goes even further.
Give by September 18.
