When half a jack-o'-lantern's face disappears overnight, the teeth marks tell you who ate it.
π The suspects:
- Gray squirrel β small, neat gnaw holes, often straight through the rind to the seeds. Chewed edges look clean and grooved
- Chipmunk β a small hole near the bottom and the seeds quietly gone. They stuff them into their cheeks and leave
- Raccoon β the face scooped out from inside, flesh scattered around, little hand-shaped smudges. The pumpkin may be rolled or tipped over
- White-tailed deer β big, ragged, torn bites. Deer have no upper front teeth, so they scrape and tear instead of cutting clean
- Groundhog β wide, chunky gnawing with big paired tooth marks, often from the bottom up. They're fattening for winter and love squash
π Does it have to stop?
No. A plain pumpkin is a good fall meal. Just keep it safe:
- No paint, glitter, glue, or wax on any pumpkin left outside
- Pull the candle, wick, and any wire
- Keep it in the yard or garden, away from the road, so the deer and raccoons don't end up in traffic
- After Halloween, smash it and spread it in a corner, or compost it.
