Volunteer Life Saving Corps The Volunteer Life Saving Corps was the first volunteer lifeguard organization in the U.S., founded in 1912. A new concrete Station was built in 1920.

In 1914, it was chartered by the American Red Cross, and the Corps was renamed the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps. The corps has always operated out of a Station at the end of Beach Boulevard. The first Station was a small wooden barn that housed a mule cart used to carry the corps’ rescue dory. That building included first-aid rooms, locker rooms, showers, offices, and a dormitory. It also included a 70-foot mast, called “The Peg,” from which guards could watch the beach. After serving the Corps for three decades, that building was replaced by the current American Red Cross Station, which was constructed between 1945 and 1947. The current American Red Cross Station is a National Historic Landmark. You can view more information about our Station at https://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/14000187.htm.
