Over the last week or so you may have seen some news articles and social media posts from multiple sources about the living shoreline being expanded at Riverview Park.
————————————
This living shoreline is the longest conservation project in the St. Johns River watershed, its second located at Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens but did you know that homeowners are also harnessing the power of oysters, through “Vertical (hanging) Oyster Gardens” on docks throughout the state of Florida?
——————————————
Every Spring and Fall, CCA Florida and St. Johns Riverkeeper host a Vertical Oyster Garden workshop to distribute “VOGs” to homeowners with docks from San Marco -> north to Trout & Ribault rivers (and everywhere else the salinity is right for oysters to flourish)
————————————
Oyster projects are key to water restoration! These VOGs attract baby oysters, filtering water and creating habitats for marine life. JU students test their impact.
