The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department has lifted its burn ban, effective Wednesday, as fire danger across Northeast Florida has fallen to low levels.

June 3, 1985: For the first time in the history of the JFRD, two brothers were promoted at the same time. Richard E. “Gene” Smith, 35, and Raymond E. “Eddie” Smith, Jr., 36, were promoted to the rank of suppression lieutenant. And the brothers were ranked 1 and 2 on the promotional list with Gene being number 1. The brothers were the sons of Captain Raymond E. Smith Sr., assigned to Station 14. Before the two Smith brothers retired, they both had been promoted to the rank of captain like their father.

Also promoted to lieutenant were Clyde H. Cannon, Joe D. Smith, C. Fred Henkle, Eddy M. Foye, John C. Chapman, Harry G. “Gil Mixson Jr., and Richard W. Starling. The promotional ceremony was held June 3, but the promotions were effective June 1, 1985. (Article with pictures attached)
