This week, our City, my District, and our Homes were rocked - shaken to the core by unspeakable hate and tragedy. The senseless murders of our innocent residents in the name of race and hate are overwhelming and hurtful. This hate crime has left us with disbelief and deep, unrelenting anger. As Mayor Donna Deegan, the Sheriff, City Council, Faith-Based Community Leaders and I stand in solidarity together we will support the needs of the survivors and the families during the loss of their loved ones, in an effort for them to move toward the healing they deserve.

Let me be clear. The perpetrator alone isn't responsible for this tragedy. It is also the armchair generals; extreme right-wing politicians who created policies for racists and gun-toting supremacists to thrive. These policies build an environment of continued hurt, and distrust. While expanding freedoms for some and severely curtailing them for the black and brown community.

I want there to be no mistake on where I stand. I have taken some criticism for calling for civility during a Prayer Vigil, that I organized for the victims, survivors, and the community. It is important to know that the Governor was not at the Prayer Vigil at my invitation or request. I did not invite him to speak, and I was not happy he chose to do so, because it caused much disruption. The community showed up to align with me, Mayor Donna Deegan, and Sherriff T. K. Waters to show community solidarity with the families and the survivors who were impacted.

Let there be no misunderstanding, I do not support any policies that diminish our race and who we are as a people. Nor do I support the Governors ideology of building political dynasties at our expense that hurts our black and brown communities. I’m creating legislation that will combat the effects of these policies in our community.

As I pursue this legislation, in the here and now, together we can raise funds for the families and survivors of this tragedy. 100% of all funds raised will go towards assisting those living with this terrible loss and moving toward healing.
