We shared the programs at JUMC, under our Dementia Outreach efforts, at the TRLA (Triad Retirement Living Association) Caregiver Recognition and Resource Fair. Our sweet Sally Ledbetter was one of the recognized caregivers based on her work with her mother and with the Memory Cafe and also the Support Group. She is one of the leaders on our steering committee. Also recognized was Healthteam Advantage’s employee Eleanor Bascom, Shelby Kline’s assistant. We are fortunate to have all three of these ladies helping to make our programs meaningful and successful!

Our Fall on the Farm Cafe has made us ready for cooler weather! Our hospitality team jumped into the theme using pumpkins, cookies, deviled eggs and so much more! Alan Teichman and Molly Stoutman entertained us with their musical talents. Their Appalachian Country vibes had everyone clapping and tapping their toes. A great way to get our cafe rolling! Carolyn then led everyone with a Pumpkin and Scarecrow craft where they painted and decorated tongue depressors. Volunteers were on their toes, making sure everyone had help with the hot glue gun and supplies. Finally we played 3 rounds of Fall Volleyball using fall colored balloons (representing leaves falling). Smiles and laughter echoed through the hall. Door prizes were drawn thanks to JUMC Young @ Heart gift card donations.

Our next cafe is October 20th, always the third Tuesday, at 1:30. The Theme will be Candy, How Sweet it is! We will be making our own candy to take home and playing a life size game of Candy Land with our Volunteers being the playing pieces. We would love to have you join us!

Our first Caregiver Lunch and Learn was this past Tuesday, September 8. We were so thankful that approximately 31 people were in attendance. Great turn out! Many thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont who provided both our speaker and money to provide our lunch. Caroline Oxford, Director of Family Care Services, spoke about Caregiver Burnout and Anticipatory Grief. With the Slow Goodbye, we begin mourning well before the end and this can wreck havoc with our emotions, energy and relationships. Caregivers take care of yourselves, you can't give from an empty cup!

Our next Caregiver Lunch & Learn is Monday (not Tuesday), but Monday, October 12th at 11:30. Lunch and the Speaker will be provided by the Elderlaw Firm. Attorney Denis Toman, JD, CELA will talk about how a dementia diagnosis can leave families feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what comes next. He will cover all the critical steps to take now to help protect your loved one, avoid costly mistakes, and create a plan f or future care, legal decision-making, and financial security.

Registration is required and best done through JUMC.org or through the App. Look under events to find our next L&L. This is free and open to the community.

Many people hear "What does hospice cover?" and think about insurance. However, what families often experience is that hospice covers much more than expenses - it provides support, guidance, expertise, and peace of mind.

In the latest episode of our podcast, we explore how understanding what hospice covers is only part of the picture. Then, we hear from Susan, a caregiver, who shares how having hospice support her daughter reduced stress and helped her focus more on being present in the moment and less on logistics.
