🚒🍂 Looking back at the fun from last school week! Our October Elementary Lab Day was filled with learning, creativity, and time together!

Students learned about fire safety and enjoyed a visit from Janesville Fire Department’s Station 3! We got an up-close look at the fire truck, ambulance, and firefighters’ gear. We also talked about the importance of having a fire escape plan at home and working smoke detectors. 🏠🔥

Throughout the day, we read books, explored Chrome Music Lab, and tested our listening skills with a silly game of telephone. Try passing this message around: “Sparky loves sprinklers on sparkling summer days.” It’s trickier than it sounds! 😄

We combined math and creativity by solving equations to make leaves and acorns for our ARISE Lab’s fall decorations, then enjoyed a fun in-person art lesson with Mrs. Bezat! 🎨🍁

It was a wonderful day to learn together, connect with friends, and make memories! Thank you to the firefighters from Station 3 and everyone who helped make the day special! 💜

💜 An evening to celebrate someone who gives so much to ARISE—our very own Mrs. Stephanie Davis! 🏆

Earlier this school year, we shared the wonderful news that Mrs. Davis was named one of four teachers of the year for the School District of Janesville, WI. Last night, we had the joy of celebrating her at the district’s recognition dinner honoring the Teachers, Staff, and Administrators of the Year for the 2025–2026 school year! ✨

Mrs. Davis makes a difference at ARISE Virtual Academy every day. In addition to teaching high school English, she serves as our High School Unit Lead, TAG Advocate, ACT Coordinator, and Dean. She takes on each responsibility with dedication and care, always ready to support our students, families, and fellow staff members.

Behind those many titles is someone who gives so much of herself to our school community. We see her hard work, appreciate her willingness to step up, and value the pride and heart she brings to ARISE. It was wonderful to see that dedication recognized and celebrated alongside outstanding colleagues from across the district.

Congratulations, Mrs. Davis! Thank you for all you do and for being someone our students and staff can count on. Our ARISE community is stronger because of you! 💜👏

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Davis! Share a kind word or a favorite memory in the comments to help us celebrate her. 🌟

🌟 A big thank-you to ARISE junior Conner Hill for speaking at last night’s School District of Janesville, School Board meeting!

Conner began by sharing his own journey. He attended seven schools as his family searched for a learning environment that met his needs. At ARISE, he has found small classes, more one-on-one time with teachers, several opportunities to get help, and a flexible schedule that lets his parents support his learning at home. As Conner shared with the board, those things have helped him thrive as a high school student.

He also gave the board a glimpse of what’s happening across ARISE this year! Our elementary students enjoyed their first Lab Day, with art, music, and hands-on learning both in person and virtually. Middle and high school students have been connecting with teachers and classmates at Open Labs. And last week, more than 40 students joined us for our field trip to Safari Lake Geneva! More opportunities to learn and spend time together are ahead, including trips to Skelly's Farm Market and the MMSD Planetarium.

Conner shared an exciting enrollment update: ARISE has grown from 133 students in September 2023 to 255 students this September. Another group of high school students began orientation yesterday. Because of our growing numbers, we may need to cap high school enrollment after this group, though elementary and middle school spots are still available. We’ll continue to monitor high school enrollment and offer spots as they become available.

It takes courage to share your story in front of the school board and an audience. Thank you, Conner, for stepping outside your comfort zone and doing an amazing job representing our ARISE community. We’re proud of you! 🌟

🦒🦓 We had a WILD time at Safari Lake Geneva on Wednesday! 🦬🐪

ARISE Virtual Academy students and staff traveled through the safari in two open wagons, stopping three times to get up close and personal with the animals. We saw and fed so many animals, including camels, llamas, alpacas, emus, ostriches, bison, water buffalo, yaks, antelope, and more!

Along the way, we learned about animals from around the world, their unique features and adaptations, and how conservation efforts help protect endangered species. We learned that the Ankole-Watusi’s enormous horns help release body heat, a Bactrian camel has two humps, and the scimitar-horned oryx can go its entire life without drinking water because it gets all the moisture it needs from the plants it eats!

The animals were amazing, but another important part of the day was seeing ARISE students spend time together. Since our typical school days are virtual, in-person experiences are such an important part of our students’ social-emotional learning at ARISE. Field trips give them opportunities to learn together, talk, laugh, collaborate, build relationships, and create special memories with their classmates. It was wonderful to watch friendships grow and new connections form throughout the day!

We are so thankful for experiences like this that allow our students to learn together, have fun together, and strengthen our ARISE community! 💜

🍎 Our ARISE Virtual Academy Elementary students had an “apple-solutely” wonderful time at the first Elementary Lab Day of the school year!

Today’s learning was all about apples! Students tasted different varieties, made predictions, selected their favorites, tallied the votes, and graphed the results. They also learned some surprising apple facts—including that there are more than 7,500 varieties of apples grown around the world, apples float because about 25% of their volume is air, and the Guinness World Record holder for the heaviest apple weighed 4 pounds, 1 ounce! 🍏

After reading Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss, students were challenged to see how many “apples” they could balance while racing a classmate. It was a fun way to bring the story to life while practicing balance, coordination, and good sportsmanship! 📚🍎

The fun continued with music activities led by our Innovation Specialist, Mr. Riley. Students also had the special opportunity to participate in an in-person art lesson with Mrs. Bezat, where they used paint and beads to create beautiful stained-glass apple wind chimes! 🎶🎨

Lab Days are an important part of the ARISE experience. These opportunities allow our virtual learners to connect in person, build friendships, practice cooperation and communication, and strengthen the social-emotional skills that are essential for learners of every age. We also included a virtual portion of the day so students who were unable to attend in person still had an opportunity to connect, participate, and share in the fun!

The day was filled with hands-on learning, laughter, creativity, skill-building, and new experiences. What a fantastic way to begin our Elementary Lab Days for the year!

Take a look at some of the fun we captured throughout the day! 📸🍎
