Bushy Run Battlefield Explore our museum and take a guided tour of the 1763 battlefield of Pontiac's War. Note: Any promotional or inappropriate posts will be deleted.

Colonel Henry Bouquet and a force of approximately 400 British soldiers left Carlisle in July to relieve the besieged Fort Pitt and end a series of unchecked attacks against frontier outposts. The opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement was the result of a decisive victory over the Native Americans at the Battle of Bushy Run, August 5th and 6th, 1763. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit, β€œThe March to Bushy Run” at the site’s visitor center, as well as guided and self-guided tours, special events and educational programs. The Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society is saddened by the passing of John Guhl, who passed away on Friday. John was a dedicated volunteer for more than two decades, generously giving his time to assist with parking and security during our events.

Throughout his years at Bushy Run, John was unfailingly kind, always eager to lend a hand, and a friend to so many who visited and worked here. His kindness and willingness to help made him a valued part of our community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

We are grateful for the many years John gave to Bushy Run and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who will miss him. He will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.

This year, we have sadly lost several members of our Bushy Run family. Each of these individuals has been part of the history and community that make Bushy Run so special, and we want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate all they have done for our organization and historic site.

Whether through years of volunteer service, acts of kindness, a willingness to lend a hand, or simply the friendships they built along the way, their contributions have left a lasting mark on Bushy Run. We are deeply grateful for the time, care, and dedication they shared with us, and we will continue to honor their memories as we carry our mission forward.

To all those we have lost this year, thank you for being part of our story. You are missed, remembered, and forever a part of the Bushy Run family.

Today, the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day by honoring the histories, cultures, traditions, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples, particularly the Eastern Woodlands Native peoples whose histories are deeply connected to this region.

As stewards of Pennsylvania’s only recognized Native American battlefield, we recognize our responsibility to preserve and interpret this landscape with care, respect, and historical integrity.

The history of Bushy Run Battlefield is inseparable from the histories of the Indigenous nations who called this region home. The events of 1763 unfolded within a much longer history of Native homelands, diplomacy, cultural traditions, and relationships with the land. Understanding this history requires acknowledging Indigenous perspectives and recognizing that Native history did not end with the events commemorated here.

The Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society is committed to sharing this history thoughtfully, honoring the cultures and experiences of the Eastern Woodlands peoples, and continuing to learn from the histories and perspectives of Indigenous communities and their descendants.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the peoples whose histories are part of this landscape, recognize their enduring cultural legacies, and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and interpreting this historic site with respect.

Special guests are MIGRATING to Bushy Run!

A flock of Canadian geese made a stop at Bushy Run as the leaves begin to turn and fall migration gets underway.

Canadian geese are familiar sights throughout Pennsylvania, with many migrating south in the fall while others remain here year-round. Their seasonal movements are just one more sign that autumn has arrived across the battlefield. πŸ‚

And don’t forget, we’re still here, too! Bushy Run remains open during our normal hours through the end of October.

Come visit us while the fall season is still here for us to enjoy!

Our only inside visitor today may have been a little smaller than usualβ€”but certainly no less impressive! This very large praying mantis stopped by Bushy Run for a brief visit this afternoon.

Praying mantises are found throughout Pennsylvania and are beneficial predators, helping control populations of other insects. They are generally harmless to people and are a fascinating part of Pennsylvania’s natural environment.

Nearby, we also spotted a yellow garden spider; another common Pennsylvania resident that helps control insects by catching them in its large web. Unfortunately, our spider friend was a little more camera-shy and politely declined a photoshoot.

As a reminder, Bushy Run remains open during our normal hours through the end of October! Please come visit us while the magnificent autumn season is still here! You may even encounter some of our smaller residents along the way!
