There is a particular quiet that settles over an old house as the season draws to a close.

This Saturday, October 31, will be our final day of regular tours at Glenmore Mansion until spring. If you have been meaning to step inside, there is still time to wander through our historic rooms and discover a little of the history held within these walls.

And though our regular season is drawing to a close, it is not quite farewell. We look forward to welcoming you back for our candlelight Christmas tours during the first two weekends of December.

Regular tours: Saturday, October 31
Tours begin on the hour, from 1–4 PM.

We would be delighted to welcome you before the season turns.

Glenmore has three bell pulls. Each a slender length of intricately embroidered fabric, each a small reminder of a world that once existed beyond the parlour door.

Only a few inches wide, they are easy to overlook. Yet look closely, and the hours of patient work become apparent: every stitch part of a design intended not merely to be useful, but beautiful.

Glenmore never quite lived the life of the great English country houses we encounter in novels, with their bustling households and entire staffs below stairs. These curious objects came to us by donation, rather than from the mansion’s own history, but we are glad to give them a place where their story may still be told.

There is something rather lovely about an object made for everyday use surviving long enough to become a thing of wonder.

Have you ever encountered an antique bell pull outside the pages of a book?

Have you spotted the tiny glass bowl nestled among the china? It’s a Victorian salt cellar—and this little dining-table treasure has quite a story to tell.

Long before the Victorian era, salt was treasured enough to occupy a place of honour on the dining table. In medieval households, the grand communal salt could even mark a guest’s social standing: those seated “above the salt” enjoyed greater status.

By the Victorian period, the salt cellar had become a charming little fixture of the individual place setting. These tiny open dishes, made of glass, silver, porcelain and other materials, were often accompanied by delicate salt spoons. Some were wonderfully ornate; others were simple, elegant little bowls.

But why serve salt in an open dish rather than a shaker?

Before anti-caking agents, salt readily absorbed moisture and clumped together. A little cellar allowed diners to take a pinch as needed, often with a tiny spoon.

In 1911, Morton Salt began adding magnesium carbonate to keep its salt flowing freely. Its famous “When It Rains It Pours” campaign followed in 1914, and the humble salt shaker gradually took its place on the modern table.

So the next time you see one of these tiny treasures, remember: it was once a small but familiar part of everyday dining.

Come see these little treasures—and the many stories waiting around Glenmore Mansion. With only two regular-season days remaining, there’s still time to step inside and discover a little Victorian history for yourself.

Have you missed your opportunity to tour Glenmore this season?

Only TWO DAYS LEFT to step inside Glenmore Mansion this season!

If you’ve been meaning to visit, this is your invitation to stop putting it off. The regular touring season is nearly at an end, and there are just two opportunities remaining to explore this remarkable 1868 mansion and its history.

🍂 Sunday, October 25
🍂 Saturday, October 31

Tours run from 1–4 p.m., beginning on the hour. Come discover the rooms, furnishings, and stories that have made Glenmore a local treasure for generations.

Don’t let another season slip by without seeing it for yourself. We would be delighted to welcome you!

There is a particular pleasure in being invited beyond the threshold.

From the first glimpse of Glenmore’s Second Empire facade to the rooms within, each doorway offers another view of the craftsmanship, furnishings, and quiet elegance of a bygone age.

And really, why admire a house from the outside when you may step inside?

If Glenmore has been on your list of places to visit, consider this your gentle reminder not to leave it for another day. Our regular touring season is drawing to a close, and there are only four public tour days remaining before the doors close for the season.

Following a wonderfully busy weekend that welcomed 118 visitors through the house, we would be delighted to welcome you, too.

Our remaining regular tour dates are October 17–18, Oct. 25 and Oct. 31, with tours offered from 1–4 p.m., beginning on the hour.
Please note that Glenmore will be closed to regular tours on October 24 for a special event.

After October 31, the house will close throughout November as we prepare for the Christmas season. We shall reopen for our special candlelight tours during the first two weekends of December, then close our doors until May.

So, if you’ve been waiting for the right afternoon to wander through Glenmore, admire its Victorian interiors, and discover a little local history, perhaps this is it.

We hope to see you before the season slips away.

What a day to remember at Glenmore Mansion! 🍂

Our very first Harvest & Heritage Festival was filled with autumn splendor, lively music, old-fashioned games, wonderful vendors, and the cheerful company of so many who came to spend the afternoon with us. Seeing families enjoying the grounds, friends gathering beneath the autumn sky, and visitors discovering the history within these walls made all the planning worthwhile.

An occasion such as this is never the work of one person alone, and we owe our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped bring the day to life.

To our talented vendors, thank you for sharing your wares and crafts with us. To our wonderful musicians, thank you for filling the grounds with the cheerful sounds of old-fashioned bluegrass. To our dedicated volunteers, thank you for giving your time and energy so generously. And to everyone who contributed donations and supplies, including Walmart Neighborhood Market Morristown - Buffalo Tr Walmart Supercenter Morristown - W Andrew Johnson Hwy and 84 Lumber Company thank you for helping make our first festival possible.

Most of all, thank you to every guest who joined us. Your enthusiasm and support made this first Harvest & Heritage Festival a day we shall remember fondly.

A little history, a little music, a touch of autumn, and a great many wonderful people. We could hardly have asked for more. ❤️

We look forward to welcoming you back to Glenmore Mansion!
