Leadership
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense office that will develop and promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees with ESGR as the principal advocate within DoD. The nation's Reserve components (total Guard and Reserve forces from all branches of the military) comprise approximately 48 percent of our total available military manpower. The current National Defense Strategy indicates that the Guard and Reserve will be full partners in the fully integrated Total Force. Organization
Today, approximately 4,800 volunteers, ranging from business executives, senior government representatives, educators and military personnel, serve on ESGR State Committees located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam-CNMI, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. With help and resources from the National ESGR Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, the 54 ESGR State Committees conduct employer support programs, including informational briefings, mediation and recognition of employers whose policies support or encourage participation in the National Guard and Reserve. By explaining the missions of the National Guard and Reserve and by increasing public awareness of the role of the employer, ESGR works to develop a dialogue among employers, the ESGR State Committees, and local National Guard and Reserve unit commanders and service members. ESGR is the lead advocate within the Department of Defense for Reserve Component employers. Despite the tremendous strides gained by ESGR, an enormous task remains. Census Bureau estimates the total employer population of the U.S. at 7.4 million. The estimated number of employers who employ members of the Guard and Reserve is 125,000. The estimated number of individual workplaces where Guardsmen and Reservists work is approximately 235,000. These numbers are in a constant state of flux due to Guard and Reserve recruitment, labor mobility and a dynamic business environment. The task for ESGR is to work through a nationwide network of volunteers and a small, full-time support staff to inform and educate hundreds of thousands of Reserve Component members and their employers regarding their rights and responsibilities, best practices, and to develop and maintain relationships with employers.

Nearly 50% of America’s military is made up of National Guard and Reserve members who balance the demands of military service with their civilian careers and family responsibilities. 🇺🇸

Behind many of these citizen-warriors are employers who go above and beyond by providing flexibility, understanding, and ongoing support when duty calls.

The Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their exceptional support of Guard and Reserve employees. This award is presented annually by the Secretary of War and honors organizations that demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the men and women who serve our nation.

If you are a Reserve Component Member, you know firsthand who stands behind you.

Now, it’s your opportunity to recognize them.

If your employer has supported your military service, accommodated your training and deployments, supported your family during absences, or simply made it easier to serve both your country and your community, consider nominating them for this distinguished honor.

Nominations must come from a current Guard or Reserve member employed by the organization being nominated, or from a family member acting on their behalf.

Your employer’s support makes a difference. Help us recognize the organizations that make serving our country possible by nominating them for the Secretary of War Employer Support Freedom Award.

ESGR Missouri Proudly Recognizes Michael Krauch of University of Missouri Extension.

Presented by CW5 (Ret.) Isom Folsom

On September 29, 2026, ESGR Missouri had the honor of presenting the Prestigious Patriotic Employer Award to Michael Krauch of University of Missouri Extension in recognition of his exceptional support for employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve.

Michael has consistently supported Major Carrie Elsen, U.S. Army Reserve, by providing flexibility, understanding, and genuine respect for her military service. He accommodates her training, deployments, and other military obligations while maintaining clear communication and professional support. Most importantly, he makes Major Elsen feel valued as a service member and recognizes the demands military service places on her career and family.

By encouraging Major Elsen to attend drill assemblies and fulfill her military commitments, Michael goes beyond meeting policy requirements. He fosters a workplace culture that appreciates and respects those who serve, truly exemplifying the spirit of the Patriotic Employer Award.

Michael’s leadership at University of Missouri Extension also supports the Heroes of Hives of Missouri program, a comprehensive nine-month beginning beekeeping program for veterans and service members. Through online instruction and hands-on training, the program provides veterans with a new mission, a supportive community, and the skills to care for Missouri’s pollinators. It also helps participants explore beekeeping-related businesses while supporting their physical and mental well-being. Many veterans have used the program to cope with PTSD and the challenges of transitioning from military service, and some credit it with helping save their lives.

Following the award presentation, Michael received an ESGR Coin of Excellence and ESGR pin and proudly signed the Statement of Support. The importance and history of this document were also shared, including its role as a cornerstone of ESGR’s efforts to build and maintain employer support for the Guard and Reserve. The Statement of Support encourages employers to advocate for employees who participate in military service.

Supportive employers like University of Missouri Extension are essential to maintaining the strength and readiness of our Nation’s Guard and Reserve forces.

🇺🇸 Congratulations! Thank you for supporting those who serve.
