When you think about Missouri's courts, you might picture judges, attorneys and courtrooms - and you're right 📜

But there's another important part of our justice system: you.

Missourians participate in the judicial process through jury service, public court proceedings and civic education.

Understanding your courts is one way to take an active role in your community.

Justice is a public responsibility, and learning how our courts work is a great place to start.

"Stated simply, our oath as lawyers instructs us to always act with the dignity and uprightness our profession demands.

It applies not only inside conference rooms and courtrooms but in the community as well. Being a lawyer is not just a job; it must be who we are and what defines us as professionals." - Chief Justice W. Brent Powell, Supreme Court of Missouri

Oral arguments begin this morning at the Supreme Court of Missouri.
These public proceedings are where attorneys present their case directly to the Supreme Court of Missouri judges and answer questions to clarify the legal issues that will shape Missouri law.

The appellate process centers on questions of law. Judges review trial records, examine precedent, and ensure the law was applied correctly. Oral arguments help them do that work transparently.

Happy Constitution Day!

Yesterday, in conjunction with the Kansas City-based Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar and Missouri Judicial Conference, Missouri lawyers teamed up with judges and the Supreme Court of Missouri's Civic Education Committee to speak to students in the Kansas City Public School system.

Their presentations helped students even better understand the history of the Constitution as well as the role of judges, lawyers, and the courts.
