One of my favorite places to visit in downtown J-Town when I (Mark J. Tidwell) was growing up was "The Dime Store". I don't think I ever asked my parents to take me to J.J. Newberry, the proper name of the store. I always just called it "The Dime Store".
There was something for everyone in the variety/department store. I was only interested in the toys, B•B guns, plastic model kits, fish tanks and candy aisle.
Things I sharply remember:
Getting a tiny pet turtle! The little critters were once sold by the millions in 1960s and 1970s era dime stores. The baby red-eared sliders were hatched on turtle farms in Louisiana. How cool it was to pick out my turtle!
Being raised during the "inoculation age" was somewhat traumatic for me. Doctors and nurses were contantly giving shots to kids of my era. Mother would always dangle a carrott over my head: "If you don't cry, you can go to the dime store and pick out a toy." I got several toys at the dime store, but buddy I was still crying well after "getting a shot". I still shudder thinking of such!
Also, the space race and Apollo Missions were BIG!!! during my childhood. I loved getting the Timmee brand plastic helicopters at the dime store. They had 5 rotor blades that snapped in, which constantly irritated me by not staying in place. I would "lay out of school" to see the astronauts splash down, watching them on a snowy black-and-white TV screen hooked to an outside antenna in our yard.
I'd mimick the helicopter retrieval of the space capsule right along with the live TV coverage.
John Josiah Newberry, Pennsylvania, was the founder of the chain which spanned from 1911-2002. If someone can, please tell us how long JJN operated in Jellico. The chain grew to 600 stores from Hollywood to Maine. They were known for dry goods, candy, toys, crafts, goldfish tanks, small pets such as turtles, lunch counters, and everyday low-priced items. And folks, Jellico had a "good un'"!
If my memory is right, I think????? the Wenger family was possibly the last to operate JJN in Jellico. I remember attending Jellico United Methodist Church with them while they lived here.
