🔥 Planned Prescribed Fire on the Jemez Ranger

The Santa Fe National Forest is planning to begin the 412-acre Paliza Prescribed Fire as early as Tuesday, Oct. 20, northeast of Ponderosa, New Mexico.

This prescribed fire is part of ongoing restoration work to improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, and help protect communities from the risk of severe wildfire. The project builds on previous thinning treatments and will help restore more resilient forest conditions in the Jemez Mountains.

🌲 No closures are planned, but visitors should remain alert for firefighters working in the area.

đź’¨ Smoke may be visible in and around Jemez Springs, Ponderosa, Pueblo of Jemez, Zia Pueblo, San Ysidro, and along U.S. Highway 550. Please do not report smoke from this planned operation.

Comprehensive Plan – Call for volunteers

We are starting our Village-wide Comprehensive Planning process this fall with the help of planners from the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG). Because the resulting plan will determine how we allocate municipal funds and shape local development over the coming years, we are assembling a Steering Committee of residents to lead the initiative. The process itself will rely on a series of surveys and public meetings and will depend on input from all interested parties. You do not have to be a resident of Jemez Springs to be on the Steering Committee or to participate in the planning process. Please contact Mayor Mike at 575-829-3540 or [email protected] to volunteer for the committee.

10/12/2026

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, the Village of Jemez Springs honors the rich cultures, traditions, histories, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples.

We are especially grateful for our neighbors at Jemez Pueblo (Walatowa) and for the Pueblo communities throughout New Mexico whose stewardship of these lands, waters, and natural resources stretches back countless generations. Their traditions, language, values, and connection to place continue to enrich and strengthen our region today.

As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, we recognize that honoring Indigenous peoples means more than remembering history. It means fostering understanding, building respectful partnerships, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting the communities that continue to shape the character and future of our state.

We are proud to live alongside and learn from our Pueblo neighbors and extend our deepest respect and appreciation for their resilience, wisdom, and enduring presence.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day.
