Every day, we witness the human reality of homelessness β€” a senior arriving with everything they own, a parent guiding their children through uncertainty, a veteran choosing to stay with their companion rather than face separation.

These moments are heartbreaking, but they also strengthen our resolve. They remind us why we show up, why we advocate, and why we continue providing shelter, care, and pathways forward with dignity and compassion.

Preventing homelessness before it begins requires real action. A focus on tenant protections, rent control enforcement, and the creation of truly affordable housing is essential to keeping individuals and families stably housed.

At the core of this work is a housing-first approach β€” meeting people where they are with housing and supportive services, not barriers. Because stable housing is the foundation for everything else.

As a native of Union City, Ruddys Andrade, President of Garden State CDC & PERC Shelter, shared heartfelt reflections while presenting this award. Having witnessed the growth of the Union City Police Department firsthand, he spoke to the professionalism, dedication, and talent that define their service today.

These words reflect both lived experience and deep appreciation for a department that continues to serve the community with care and integrity.
