BE AWARE OF BABY WHALES!
Gotham Whale was able to confirm that two of the humpback whales seen off Belmar and Spring Lake, NJ yesterday were a mother-calf pair! This pair was seen in only 30 feet of water in very close proximity to recreational fishing boats. They were identified as NYC0386 and NYC0387, who were also seen in June and July further off the Jersey Shore.
Most calves are weaning and getting ready to separate from their mothers this time of year, so it is a vulnerable time for them. PLEASE WATCH OUT for this little whale as it learns to feed! Always keep a distance of at least 100 feet from all whales, but give mothers and calves extra space!
If you see a whale in NY/NJ, our research team wants to know about it! Take a photo and record the coordinates, then submit your sighting to [email protected]
