Wednesdays = Packing Day!

Every Wednesday before a Blessing Basket distribution, SIHAF volunteers turn grocery bags into baskets of nourishment—one item at a time.
Today, over 20 volunteers took on the challenge, working assembly-line style to fill 300 grocery bags with 17 different nutritious, shelf-stable pantry staples. Everything from vegetables, fruit, pasta sauce and peanut butter to rice, dry beans, oats and pasta. That’s a whopping 5,100 grocery items packed and ready to go!
And that’s just the beginning. The shelf-stable foods are one part of each Blessing Basket. Tomorrow, the fresh produce arrives, bringing even more goodness—and a little taste of what’s in season.

Last Saturday, 308 Blessing Baskets were distributed to our neighbors living on Johns & Wadmalaw Islands. And, the need continues to grow. Each month, new families are signing up to receive the monthly Blessing Baskets. Thanks to all the volunteers who worked through the rain greeting each family that drove up and loading in bags of groceries. They were rewarded with a large rainbow high above Bohicket Road. Many, many watermelons were donated by Fields to Families. SIHAF Board Chair, Shep McKinley's job was to load them into each car. Thanks Shep. (Pictured ) And we are grateful to Fields to Families, a SIHAF partner, who grew, harvested and delivered so many watermelons along with other fresh from the field produce.

A Special Gift of Service

Gregory recently moved to Charleston from the Midwest to help his 87-year-old mother, Celestine. He came Saturday to pick up her September Blessing Basket—but after seeing our cheerful volunteers packing and distributing baskets, he decided to stay and help!

Thank you, Gregory, for sharing your time and your gift of service. And thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who make Blessing Basket days so special. We hope to see you again soon, Gregory! ❤️

Creating awareness for Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation (SIHAF!
Shep McKinley and Carol Cronk from SIHAF along with Mary and Linda from Meals on Monday's located on Wadmalaw Island participated in the Kiawah Island Club's Non-profit Impact Event last Thursday.

The event gave SIHAF a wonderful opportunity to bring to life some of the many ways our Programs and Partners nourish our Johns and Wadmalaw Island neighbors.

Kiawah Island Club Members were treated to tasting samples that showcased the heart and creativity behind several of our community partners. The offerings included Amor Healing Kitchen’s popular plant-based hummus; Mary’s Okra & Rice, made with fresh-from-the-field okra generously provided by Fields to Families; and Charleston Chews, a beloved recipe featured in the Brunch at the Bench Cookbook: The Flavors of Rockville, created by MOM’s (Meals on Mondays).

Each bite told a story—a story of neighbors helping neighbors, fresh food finding its way to local tables and cherished recipes carrying memories from one generation to the next. The event gave SIHAF an opportunity to share how our community programs and partners, working together can help ensure our island neighbors have access to nourishing food.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to the Kiawah Island Club and the always friendly, gracious, and hard-working staff at the River Course for creating such a special event. Their generosity provided a meaningful opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the critical work of the local nonprofits who are committed every day to nourishing our neighbors and strengthening our island communities.

June brings an abundance of produce in the Lowcountry. This month’s Blessing Baskets were overflowing with a colorful and nutritious mix of fresh fruit and vegetables along with meat, eggs, cheese, butter and other pantry items. Thank you to Fields to Families and the Lowcountry Food Bank for sharing their bounty of produce. Thanks also to all of the Blessing Basket Volunteers who packed and distributed 300 Blessing Baskets for our neighbors in need.
