Thank you to Ben Westhoff for sharing his investigative work and helping bring greater awareness to this critical issue.

And thank you to WakeUp Carolina and The Charleston Center (Charleston County Government) for partenering with us on this program.

🌱Kids got hands-on with nature in West Ashley Library's new pollinator garden!

During a fall seed-saving program, kids explored plants, discovered insects, decorated their own seed envelopes, and learned how to save seeds for spring planting. They even got to taste a dill-inspired snack and spot Monarch butterflies visiting the milkweed!🦋

A big thank you to Eagle Scout Alex Platte who recently helped install the new garden sign and to his grandmother Kay, a master gardener, for their support. 💚

NEW EPISODE: The aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV-10) has been a landmark of Charleston Harbor for fifty years, but few visitors recall the struggle to secure the ship for South Carolina. The opening of a naval museum at Patriots Point in 1976 capped a years-long campaign, both to save the aging carrier from the scrap heap and to prevent a rival state from claiming the famous “Fighting Lady” of World War II.

Looking for a new tool to support young readers? Learn more about decodable books and how they can help children build essential reading skills.

The new pilot collection, located at the Otranto Road Library, features books intentionally designed to align with the sound-spelling patterns children learn through phonics instruction. Decodable books give beginning and struggling readers opportunities to practice these skills independently, helping build reading accuracy, fluency, confidence, and automaticity.

This collection is made possible through our partnership with Lowcountry Literacy Project.
