🎃📚 Read & Resist Book Club: Spooky Season Edition! 👻✊
WCDP’s Read & Resist Book Club is closing out the year with a hauntingly powerful read: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due!
Set in the Jim Crow South of 1950, this gripping historical horror novel follows 12-year-old Robbie Stephens Jr. as he’s sent to a brutal reform school where the ghosts reveal terrifying truths. Inspired by the real-life atrocities at Florida’s Dozier School for Boys and the author’s own family history, this story confronts racism, systemic injustice, and the ways painful chapters of our history continue to shape society today. 🖤
Join us for our LAST book club meeting of the year as we discuss history, justice, and the power of stories that refuse to let the past be forgotten.
📅 November 12th
⏰ 6:00 PM
Come ready to read, reflect, resist, and connect with fellow community members! 📖💙

🎃🔥 BBQ, Ballots, & Boos! Oh My! 👻🗳️
WCDP brought the spooky season spirit with delicious BBQ, great company, and a Halloween slideshow highlighting the ways Tennessee has struggled under 15 years of Republican supermajority rule. 🇺🇸 We loved seeing our Democratic community come together while our little ghouls and goblins had a blast in their costumes!
We had so much fun that we just might make this an annual tradition! 👀🎃

🎃👻 WELCOME TO THE TN GOP HOUSE OF HORRORS! 👻🎃

⚠️ WARNING: The following slideshow contains disturbing images of Tennessee’s reality. Viewer discretion is advised. 😱
15 years. One Republican supermajority. And a whole lot of nightmares.
💀 Education funding that leaves too many students behind.
🩺 Healthcare horror stories that hit close to home.
🏚️ A cost of living that makes getting by feel like a horror movie.
👻 And quality-of-life rankings that should send a chill down every Tennessean’s spine.
This isn’t fiction. It’s our state’s reality.

At BBQ, Ballots, & Boos—Oh My!, we’re pulling back the curtain on the real-life horror show unfolding in Tennessee. Our slideshow, TN GOP House of Horrors, takes a spooky look at where Tennessee stands—and asks the terrifying question: What happens when 15 years of one-party rule leave everyday Tennesseans feeling like the forgotten souls of the state?
The jump scares are real. The consequences are REALER. And the scariest part? These aren’t ghosts from Tennessee’s past. They’re the issues we’re living with right now. 🕸️
🦇 We came for the BBQ. We stayed for the BOO-worthy rankings. We left ready to face the facts while voting accordingly at the ballot box.
Because Tennessee deserves more than a government that gives us the creeps. We deserve a future that doesn’t haunt us.
🎃 Let’s turn this horror story into a comeback story. 🎃

There are 3 TN Constitution Amendments on the ballot. Be aware of their consequences before you vote. Vote NO on all 3!

👻🍁It’s Spooky Season and the WCDP Read & Resist Book Club is ready to make our book choice. What makes these books especially interesting for Read & Resist is that the monsters aren’t just monsters. Each book uses the supernatural to shine a light on something very real: racism, gender inequality, institutional injustice, historical trauma, and the power of people coming together to resist it. They’re spooky, thought-provoking, and guaranteed to give the book club plenty to discuss!
✨🌙Let us know which one you think we should read and then join us in November to discuss them (date TBD). Everyone is welcome—no secret society membership required. 🖤📖
