Michele Zakrajsek's 4th graders celebrated their place value learning in math today with a Place Value Party. The class rotated through stations to review skills in reading, writing, rounding, and comparing numbers up to the millions place. The students created numbers, analyzed them, and even played “Name That Tune” with song titles that included a number. Of course, snacks made the party even better!

On Tuesday evening, Superintendent Eric Race and the Board of Education honored Bob Blakeslee for his unwavering support and dedication to the Johnson City Central School District. Superintendent Race and Assistant Superintendent for Administration Elisa Eaton expressed their gratitude for Mr. Blakeslee’s expertise, guidance, and commitment, especially during the district’s response to the 2025 school fire. They also congratulated him on his retirement as Fire Marshal with the Johnson City Fire Department and thanked him for his many years of dedicated service to the community.

Superintendent Race also expressed his appreciation to the members of the Board of Education and student board members in recognition of School Board Member Recognition Week. He thanked them for their continued support of the district and highlighted the significant time, effort, and dedication they volunteer in service to the community. He noted that the district’s unique committee structure, consisting of seven committees, allows board members to play an active role in supporting student well-being, district facilities, fiscal responsibility, and the continuation of the district’s strong traditions. The Superintendent concluded by thanking the board members for their commitment, leadership, and dedicated service to our community’s students.

In alumni news, we recently learned that Johnson City alumna Rosanne Groover Norris (Class of 1972) published her debut historical novel, “The Knewing of Pearl Harbor." It follows the story of Finn Hayes, a young Irish-American sailor from Johnson City who was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The story is anchored in the real experience of Norris’ second cousin, Joseph M. Pastor, a local Navy man credited with firing the first shots that morning. She said she first interviewed him decades ago for a class at Binghamton University and carried his story with her for forty years before writing her book.

With a foreword written by retired U.S. Navy Commander Suzanne Giesemann, the book also features a cover created by JC High School art teacher Eric Adolf. He painted the Stargazer carousel horse against a nautical Pearl Harbor backdrop. For the author, having a Johnson City educator bring the image to life has made the book feel truly homegrown.

The book is available now through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
