Tom Galligan, 76, walked into the Johnston Fire Department Station 1 with his wife, Yvonne, and thanked the members who helped him on the morning of Sept. 14 when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle as the driver was backing out of a driveway on Greenville Avenue.

“It happened fast,” said Galligan. “I was coming down the road from the gym and the driver of the vehicle didn’t see me. “I tried to get around him, but my bike caught on the fender or something and I was thrown into the landscaped area just beyond.”

Galligan said he recognized the driver because his mother is a regular at his gym. See story for comment.

At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2026, Johnston Fire and Police responded to a well-being check that developed into a search and rescue operation along the Pocasset River.
After initial contact, the individual entered a difficult-to-access area near the river. Johnston Fire, Cranston Fire, Smithfield Fire, Rhode Island State Police, and Johnston Police worked together using personnel, boats, and drones to locate and reach the individual despite challenging terrain and dense brush.
Around 2:00 a.m., fire personnel made contact, safely removed the individual from the water, and transported them to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation.
Johnston Fire Department thanks all of our personnel as well as those from responding agencies for their teamwork and dedication, which helped bring this incident to a safe resolution.
Chief Keith A. Calci
