We've unfortunately noticed an uptick in thefts from vehicles, especially on the west side of our community. As a reminder, be sure to:
🚓always lock your vehicle doors, even if you are just stepping away for a moment.
🚓never leave valuables inside your car, whether it's locked or not,
🚓not leave your vehicle unlocked and running, even to "warm it up" as temperatures drop outside.

According to the National Coalition for Safer Road, nearly half of parents whose children ride a school bus say their child has experienced a close call because of dangerous driving near a school bus or in a school zone. This week is National School Bus Safety Week, a great reminder for all motorists in Johnston and across central Iowa to slow down around school buses and in school zones, watch out for student pedestrians, and always stop for a school bus stop arm!

We're hosting a prescription drug take back event on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Public Safety Building. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to drop off your expired or unwanted prescription pills, tablets, capsules, patches, ointments and creams, your over-the-counter pills and medicines, pet medications, va**ng devices or e-cigarettes (lithium battery must be removed). Please DO NOT bring any medication that includes needles, syringes or sharp objects, any illicit or illegal drugs, or any compressed gas cylinders, aerosols or asthma inhalers.

Chief McDaniel, Captain Jensen, Captain Yeager, and Captain Nore, thank you for all that you do for our department and our community. After handing out tickets all summer long, the Johnston Police Department awarded a brand-new bicycle to Kinnick this week, after he was “busted in a good way.” Johnston police witnessed Kinnick practicing good bicycle safety in our community this summer when he was "busted for being awesome," and wrote him a ticket. This ticket, and around 100 other tickets from across Johnston, were entered into a prize drawing for a new bike, courtesy of the police department. In addition, Kinnick, and all other ticket holders were able to bring their tickets to Van Dee's Ice Cream Shoppe this summer, to turn them in to receive a free ice cream cone.

This year marked the 11th year of our “Busted in a Good Way” program. We look forward to handing out more tickets next summer, and want to thank Van Dee’s for its continued support of this beloved community tradition.
