Nationally, approximately 24 first responders lose their lives on interstate highway shoulders every year while doing their job. According to AAA, an estimated 12% of interstate traffic fatalities, or 600+ deaths per year, are the result of shoulder crashes. From 2016-2020 Oregon experienced 207 crashes involving vehicles parked off the road. These crashes resulted in 7 fatalities, 13 serious injuries, and 164 moderate and minor injuries.

Oregon's Move Over Law requires drivers to move over or slow down at least five miles below the posted speed limit when there's flashing lights of ANY color from a vehicle parked on the side of the road. Yes, this does include ANY vehicle from a tow truck, public works, emergency response, hazard lights on a car or semi, law enforcement or ODOT vehicles. October 17th is National Move Over Day and the Oregon Department of Transportation wants to remind drivers that moving over saves lives every day.

REMINDER, PLANNED POWER OUTAGE SCHEDULED FOR WALLOWA COUNTY TONIGHT

WALLOWA COUNTY – A reminder for Wallowa County residents, Pacific Power is planning a scheduled power outage this evening, Thursday, October 15, through the early morning of Friday, October 16. Residents are advised to unplug sensitive electronics in advance of the outage.

Residents should also prepare for the temporary loss in heating during the outage. As of the time of writing, low temperatures for tonight and early Friday morning range from the mid-to-lower 30s, possibly hitting the freezing point near sunrise.

For more information, see the following release from Wallowa Valley Network:

(Press release from Wallowa Valley Network)

Pacific Power is planning an outage starting on Thursday, October 15th at about 10PM and ending Friday, the 16th, at 5AM. It sounds like the outage will cover most or all of the county.

Pacific Power asks that customers unplug sensitive electronics. This is a good idea. Please try not to rearrange how any network cables are plugged in when you do this, though.

Once grid power is restored:

If you have any issues with your internet connection, please do not press the reset button on any WiFi routers; if you do this, it wipes the router settings, which is not what you want to do.

Please make sure that any network devices are plugged back in to power, and look for any network cables that may have inadvertently been unplugged, and attempt to plug them in how they were before.

Please give network gear 5-10 minutes, once it is powered back on, to start up and reconnect. Most WVN systems will have been continuously backup-powered, so most people should not experience any delay on our end. However, in a few areas, our equipment may need time to power back up and reconnect, so please don’t worry if it takes 10 minutes or a bit more.

If you have any issues getting reconnected that you are not able to resolve with the above steps, please give us a call for help!

NEOEDD TO HOLD LOTTERY FOR INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNT PROGRAM

ENTERPRISE – (Press release from the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District) The Northeast Oregon Economic Development District (NEOEDD) is accepting intake forms for the popular Individual Development Account (IDA) matched savings program. This program helps low-to-moderate-income residents of Baker, Union, and Wallowa counties save to invest in a small business, post-secondary education, specialized training, assistive technology/equipment, or a vehicle. For every $1 saved, participants receive $5 match. Participants may earn up to a $10,000 match after saving $2,000 and meeting program requirements, for a total of $12,000. As one participant described their experience, “The IDA program emphasized the value of saving in a whole new way and improved my financial literacy. It helped me face financial fears, tackle big projects, and most importantly believe in my business ability and growth.”

Funding is limited. The IDA application process has two parts: (1) Complete the intake form on the NEOEDD website by November 1, 2026 to enter the lottery; (2) Applicants selected by lottery will meet with NEOEDD staff to confirm eligibility and complete the full application; funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to those selected by lottery who complete the full application.

To learn more about eligibility and to enter the lottery, visit: https://neoedd.org/regional-planning/individual-development-account/ For additional assistance contact [email protected].

“We’re grateful to be able to offer the IDA program. It has a significant impact on small businesses and households with limited income,” said Lisa Dawson, NEOEDD Executive Director.
