Praying for their families and friends and remembering their sacrifice. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

October 12, 1999 — We Remember

Twenty-seven years ago today, our community experienced an unspeakable tragedy. Three law enforcement officers, Atascosa County Sheriff's Deputies Mark Stephenson and Thomas Monse Jr., as well as Texas DPS Trooper Terry Miller, were ambushed and killed in the line of duty.

Over a quarter century has passed, but the weight of that loss has not faded. It lives on in the families left behind.

Today, we honor not only the sacrifice of these three brave men, but also the strength of the women who stood beside them... their widows, Rachel, Mary Alice, and Karen.

These families have carried forward with dignity and grace, keeping the memory of their husbands alive year after year.

We will not forget what happened on that terrible night. We will not forget the officers who gave everything, and we will continue to stand alongside the families they left behind, honoring their service and their sacrifice every single day.

Yesterday, the ceremony recognizing the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks was held at the Sheriff’s Office hosted by the American Legion & JVFD was a somber reminder of the tragic loss of life that day and for many days and years after. It was also a much needed reminder of how we united as Americans. Thank you to Bruce Eichman for sharing his photos of the event.

Over the last two days my office provided free training to our local law enforcement officers. These trainings focused on Investigation and Prosecution of Family & Domestic Violence crimes and providing resources to victims and survivors of these offenses. The SaferPath Family Violence Shelter joined us to share information about their resources and support for victims in our community.

We also provided training on the Juvenile Justice System and Investigating Juvenile Cases to address the increase in violent felony offenses committed by juvenile offenders.

My office is committed to working together with our law enforcement officers to investigate and prosecute these offenses and offenders. Our victim assistance team is working daily to ensure survivors are protected and supported as these cases are prosecuted.

If you or anyone you know needs assistance please call us at 830-769-3573 or call SaferPath at 830-569-2001.
