Today, Sheriff Jake Guerra hosted a school safety meeting bringing together representatives from all five Atascosa County school districts, every law enforcement agency operating within our county, EMS, the county Office of Emergency Management, and TEA.

This was our second such meeting this year, following one hosted by ACSO in June.

Keeping our students and staff safe takes a team effort. When schools, law enforcement, EMS, emergency management, and community partners sit at the same table, we share information, strengthen our response plans, and build the relationships that matter most in an emergency.

The group also discussed plans for upcoming joint trainings that will include law enforcement, EMS, fire departments, and school personnel, so that everyone is prepared to work together when it counts.

While law enforcement agencies meet with individual school districts on a regular basis, our next countywide meeting is already scheduled for February 2027.

We appreciate the commitment of every school district and agency leader who took part. Our children deserve a unified approach to safety, and we will keep building on the strong foundation of teamwork that already exists across Atascosa County.

No pavement? No problem!

Through the strategic use of grant funds, the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office has obtained a 3/4 ton truck, trailer, and 2026 Can-Am Defender to enhance our search and rescue capabilities.

This equipment will be used to assist not only in bailouts, but more importantly, to locate and rescue lost individuals across our rural county.

Whether it's a child who wandered off on a vast property, an elderly person in need of help, or anyone else who requires rescue in challenging terrain or when weather affects our ability to traverse ranch land.

Our rural landscape presents unique challenges, and residents in distress deserve the right equipment and rapid response.

This investment allows us to reach people quickly and effectively, in areas where standard vehicles can't go.

We're grateful for opportunities that allow us to enhance our capabilities without placing additional burden on local taxpayers.

Having the right tools for the job=a safer Atascosa County!

Congratulations to Dispatcher Sara Ortiz on receiving her 10-year service pin this week, presented by Chief Deputy Matt Miller.

Sara has been a vital part of our dispatch team for a decade, answering calls and coordinating response to keep our community safe.

Dispatch is the first contact the public has with any law enforcement agency, and Sara exemplifies what it means to do that job with professionalism and dedication.

Thank you, Sara, for 10 years of outstanding service to Atascosa County!

On October 8, the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office took a report of a burglary in Christine in which over 30 fi****ms were stolen.

Our Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol teams worked every lead, which led to multiple search warrants being obtained and served

These efforts resulted in the recovery of the bulk of those stolen fi****ms and the arrest of Juan Samaniego for Burglary and Possession of a Fi***rm by Felon.

This case is ongoing, and additional arrests are pending.

While this investigation was spearheaded by Sgt. Investigator Stephen Wilson, numerous members of our CID and Patrol Divisions worked to get these stolen guns off the street.

We appreciate the cooperation of the community and thank those who provided information in this investigation.

If you have information about this case or any other criminal activity, please contact the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office 25/7/365.

Just as a reminder we regularly get reports of people receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be members of the Atascosa County Sheriff's office or some other law enforcement agency.

These calls that usually tell them that they have an unpaid citation or they didn't show up for jury duty and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

We cannot emphasize enough that this is not a tactic that any legitimate law enforcement agency uses to contact people regarding fines and the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office will never try to collect fines over the phone.

If you receive a call like this or anything similar to this it is going to be a scam 100% of the time.

Do not under any circumstances give out personal information, credit card information, or bank account information to the callers on these scam phone calls.

October 12, 1999 — We Remember

Twenty-seven years ago today, our community experienced an unspeakable tragedy. Three law enforcement officers, Atascosa County Sheriff's Deputies Mark Stephenson and Thomas Monse Jr., as well as Texas DPS Trooper Terry Miller, were ambushed and killed in the line of duty.

Over a quarter century has passed, but the weight of that loss has not faded. It lives on in the families left behind.

Today, we honor not only the sacrifice of these three brave men, but also the strength of the women who stood beside them... their widows, Rachel, Mary Alice, and Karen.

These families have carried forward with dignity and grace, keeping the memory of their husbands alive year after year.

We will not forget what happened on that terrible night. We will not forget the officers who gave everything, and we will continue to stand alongside the families they left behind, honoring their service and their sacrifice every single day.

School Safety Threat Resolved

Last week, Atascosa County Sheriff's Office responded to a credible threat made against Charlotte ISD. Our patrol teams responded immediately to secure the school and begin the investigation.

During the initial response, officers located a subject of interest and arrested him on an outstanding warrant. Ultimately it was determined that this individual was not involved in the school threat.

Through thorough investigative work, we were able to identify the actual perpetrators of the threat through the use of computer forensics.

While technology offers us many advantages in tracking down those who commit internet-based crimes, it often takes time to retrieve the data related to these crimes from the companies that possess it.

It's not always easy but persistence and diligent follow-up led to both individuals (who are minors) being located and charged with Terroristic Threats yesterday. They are now detained at the Atascosa County Juvenile Detention Center.

We want to commend our patrol and investigative teams for their diligent work in identifying those responsible. We also want to thank Charlotte ISD and the community for their cooperation and trust during this investigation.

School safety is a top priority. Threats against our schools will be taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will continue working with our school partners and stakeholders to ensure our students and staff remain safe.

Leadership on the Issues That Matter

Yesterday, Sheriff Jake Guerra, Chief Matt Miller, and Deputy Chief Eric Kaiser, along with other local law enforcement leaders, were invited to participate in a Governor's Roundtable discussion in San Antonio focused on fentanyl distribution and border security, critical issues affecting our community and our state.

This kind of collaboration is essential. Public safety shouldn't be a political issue. It is a shared responsibility that demands we work together.

The Atascosa County Sheriff's Office stands ready to partner with any local, state, or national leader committed to protecting our citizens.

We're grateful for the opportunity to be heard and to contribute our perspective and experience to these vital conversations.

The fight against fentanyl and the security of our borders impacts every one of us, and it takes leadership at all levels working together to make a difference.
