🚒 CCFR HazMat Team Responds to Suspicious Envelope

Earlier today, Capital City Fire Rescue’s Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Team was activated in response to a suspicious envelope addressed to the Alaska Division of Elections that may contain an unknown white powder that was intercepted at the post office.

CCFR was notified by the FBI on Friday of the potential arrival of the envelope. Through advance coordination with our federal partners, precautionary measures were established to ensure a safe response.

The envelope arrived this morning, and our HazMat Team was activated to safely retrieve and secure it for the FBI.

At this time, the contents of the envelope have not been confirmed. Our response is being conducted out of an abundance of caution.

The safety of our community, emergency responders, and those potentially affected remains our highest priority.

We appreciate the coordination and professionalism of our HazMat personnel and federal partners in addressing this situation.

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

🚒✈️ More than 200 community members joined us for a special day at Capital City Fire Rescue Station 3! ☀️

Families enjoyed our open house and celebrated the traditional push-in ceremony for our newest airport firefighting apparatus.

The new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) truck completes a major modernization of our airport firefighting fleet, strengthening our ability to protect passengers, aircraft, and Juneau’s vital air transportation connection.

We also showcased our new Marsh Master, a specialized rescue vehicle designed to reach marshland and other difficult off-airport terrain during an aircraft emergency.

The best part? Seeing children explore the apparatus, meet our firefighters, and share in the excitement of this important milestone.

Thank you to Juneau International Airport Manager Andres Delgado, our CCFR ARFF Division Chief Brandon Bagwell, Fire Prevention Chief Theresa Ross, and all CCFR personnel who made this day possible. And thank you to the citizens of Juneau for your continued support!

🚒 Congratulations, Captain Andrew Wheeler! 🚒

Today marks an incredible milestone in Andrew’s career with Capital City Fire Rescue, and what a journey it has been!

Andrew’s story with CCFR began in 2010 as an office assistant. But it didn’t take long for him to catch the fire service bug! 🔥 He became an Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT), then a volunteer, earning his EMT and Firefighter certifications along the way. His dedication led him to a seasonal BLS position, and in 2014, he advanced to full-time Firefighter EMT.

Never one to stop learning or growing, Andrew became a paramedic six years ago through CCFR’s education sponsorship program. After 12 years of service, hard work, and continued commitment to the fire service, today he takes the next step in his career as Fire Captain! 👨‍🚒

One of the most meaningful traditions in the fire service is having family pin the badge on a newly promoted officer’s uniform. A badge represents far more than a new title or rank. It represents years of dedication, sacrifice, responsibility, and the commitment to serve others. Having family place that badge on your uniform is a reminder that while one person wears the badge, the journey to earning it is rarely theirs alone. Behind every firefighter is a support system that shares in the sacrifices, celebrates the victories, and helps make the journey possible.

Andrew, congratulations on this well-deserved promotion! Your journey from office assistant to Fire Captain is a testament to what happens when someone finds their calling and commits to growing within it. May you lead with confidence, serve with compassion, and never lose the passion that started it all.

Welcome to the officer ranks, Captain Wheeler! We’re proud to have you serving our community and look forward to seeing all you accomplish in this next chapter. 🚒👏

⚓ Welcome to Juneau, USS Ted Stevens! 🇺🇸⚓

A special arrival in Juneau today as the newly commissioned USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128) makes a port visit to Alaska’s capital city.

The USS Ted Stevens is one of the U.S. Navy’s newest Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers and was officially commissioned just days ago, on October 3 in Whittier, Alaska. The ship honors the late U.S. Senator Ted Stevens and his long history of service to Alaska and our nation.

The community will have an opportunity to welcome the crew during a free downtown block party Thursday, October 8, from 4:00–8:00 PM on Front Street.

Tours will be conducted Thursday (10/8) & Friday (10/9) from noon to 4:30 pm. Due to security requirements, you must be a US citizen. If you would like to tour the USS TED STEVENS, one must sign-up online at this link.

🚒 CCFR September2026 by the Numbers

September was another busy month for Capital City Fire Rescue. Our crews responded to 572 incidents, averaging approximately 19 calls every day.

🚑 466 EMS and Rescue calls
🔥 5 Fires
⚠️ 5 Hazardous Conditions
🛠️ 32 Service Calls
📞 37 Good Intent Calls
🚨 27 False Alarms/False Calls

Rescue and EMS responses accounted for approximately 81% of our total call volume.

What makes these numbers especially significant is that these responses were handled primarily from just two staffed fire stations: Station 1 Downtown and Station 3 in the Valley/Airport area. From those two stations, our crews provide all-hazards emergency response across Juneau's large and diverse service area.

Whether it is a medical emergency, structure fire, technical rescue, aircraft emergency, water rescue, hazardous condition, or simply someone who needs help, our crews remain ready when the community calls.

Thank you to our firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, Community Health team, volunteers, and support staff who make that response possible every day.
