I was honored to sponsor a legislative citation celebrating the 100th anniversary of Resurrection Lutheran Church and to join Senator Jesse Kiehl in presenting this special recognition to the congregation.

For a century, Resurrection Lutheran Church has been more than a place of worship. It has been a place of gathering, service, education, music, and support for generations of Juneau residents.

Guided by its mission, “to promote spiritual growth in Christ and service to all people,” the church has made a lasting impact through its youth and educational programs, music ministries, including its handbell choir, and by opening its doors to community gatherings and performances ranging from the Bach Singers to Tlingit dancers.

The church also holds an important place in Juneau’s history. It served as an anchor for Japanese American members before, during, and after their incarceration during World War II and provided a welcoming center for servicemen, including hundreds stationed at the Duck Creek Quonset huts.

From preschool programs and youth activities to its food pantry and quilting group, Resurrection Lutheran Church has continually found ways to serve its neighbors and strengthen our community.

Thank you to the generations of pastors, congregants, volunteers, and families who have made this church such an important part of Juneau’s history.

A special thank-you to Kelly McGee, congregation council president, and Lois Wetherall and Ken Koelsch, pictured here, for leading the church’s 100th anniversary recognition celebration and helping make this milestone so meaningful.

Haines Volunteer Fire Department Open House Today, Friday, October 9th from 3PM to 6 PM! The Haines Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) is hosting a free, three-hour Open House today at 315 Haines Highway, and everyone is welcome! Community members can meet local firefighters, tour the fire hall and fire trucks, explore emergency response equipment, watch firefighting and EMS demonstrations, and learn valuable fire prevention tips. Attendees will also have the opportunity to practice using fire extinguishers. Being prepared and knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher can make a huge difference in an emergency. When a fire starts, every second counts, and the time to learn is before an emergency happens—not when you need to act fast. Hands-on practice can help build the knowledge and confidence needed to respond safely. Light refreshments will be provided. Bring the family, stop by, and take advantage of this opportunity to learn important safety skills while getting to know the volunteers who help protect the Haines community!
