🚒 TRAINING FOR THE REAL THING: VERTICAL VENTILATION

Why do firefighters cut holes in roofs during a fire? There’s actually a very important reason!

Our crews have recently been putting our new roof training prop to work, practicing vertical ventilation, an important part of the work performed by our truck company during structure fires.

When a building is on fire, heat, smoke, and dangerous gases can build up inside. Vertical ventilation involves creating an opening in the roof to allow that heat and smoke to escape. When properly coordinated with interior firefighting operations, this can improve visibility and conditions for firefighters working inside and help support rescue and fire suppression efforts.

It’s a challenging task that requires firefighters to work safely and efficiently on a roof while operating saws and other tools, often under difficult conditions.

Our new training prop gives crews the opportunity to practice these skills in a controlled environment, from positioning our aerial ladder and working on pitched roofs to cutting ventilation openings and coordinating as a team.

Training like this is about more than cutting a hole in a roof. It’s about building proficiency, improving teamwork, and making sure our firefighters are prepared to perform when it matters most.

Did you know a new tower ladder fire truck now costs around $2 million and can take years to be ready?

Many of our trucks are older than national recommendations, and with costs rising each year, there is no money to replace them. But because they take so long to arrive, we will need to order some soon.

Join us for an upcoming Information Session to learn more about the many challenges Roberts Park is facing, including rising costs and aging equipment.

📚📖 A Mystery Reader at Glen Oaks Elementary!

Earlier this week, Battalion Chief James Janchenko traded his fire helmet for a good book as one of the mystery guest readers at Glen Oaks Elementary School’s Family Reading Night!

We love opportunities to connect with the students and families in our community outside of emergency calls. Events like these are a great way for our firefighters to build relationships with the kids we serve while encouraging a love of reading and learning.

Thank you to Glen Oaks Elementary School for inviting us to be part of such a fun evening! We always enjoy spending time with our future firefighters, readers, and community leaders! 🚒📚

🔥 : How Long Does 750 Gallons of Water Last?

Did you know Engine 302 carries 750 gallons of water—but a single hoseline could use that entire supply in just over four minutes?

Fire engines arrive carrying their own water, allowing firefighters to begin attacking a fire quickly without waiting for a connection to a fire hydrant.

💧 But 750 gallons doesn't last as long as you might think.

Our smallest hoseline flows approximately 185 gallons of water per minute. If that single line were flowing continuously, it could use Engine 302's entire 750-gallon onboard water supply in just over four minutes.

And at a working structure fire, more than one hoseline may be operating at the same time.

🚒 That's why establishing a continuous water supply is so important.

While one crew begins fire attack using the water carried on the engine, another important fireground task is securing a water source. A large supply hose can connect the engine to a nearby fire hydrant, providing access to the municipal water system and allowing firefighting operations to continue.

You may also notice supply hose stretching quite a distance down the street. The best available hydrant isn't always directly in front of the fire, and apparatus placement must leave room for engines, trucks, ambulances and other incoming equipment.

It's also why keeping fire hydrants visible and accessible is so important. Vehicles, landscaping, snow and other obstructions can make it more difficult for firefighters to quickly access a hydrant when it's needed.

So while 750 gallons gives us the water to get started, the hydrant helps keep it flowing.

The next time you see a fire engine connected to a hydrant, you'll know why establishing that water supply is such an important part of fighting a fire.

Roberts Park trains them, then loses them.

We struggle to keep the firefighters and paramedics we train, as many leave for nearby departments that offer higher salaries and full-time positions.

Right now, we have 19 full-time and 26 part-time responders. Part-time staff help, but not every part-time worker is both a firefighter and a paramedic, which can limit our ability to serve our community.

RPFPD Community is a conversation about the future of emergency services in our district, and we need to hear from you.

Stop by one of our Information Sessions to learn more and lend your voice to our future.

🚒 Behind the Scenes: A LOT of Hose and a LOT of Hard Work! 💪

Did you know that each of our fire engines carries nearly HALF A MILE of fire hose?! 🤯

That’s a lot of hose to maintain, and every single foot of it needs to be ready when an emergency happens!

Each year, our firefighters conduct annual hose testing and inspections to ensure that all of our fire hose is safe, reliable, and ready for service. Every section is inspected and pressure tested, and any hose that doesn’t meet the required standards is immediately removed from service and replaced.

With three fire engines fully equipped with hose, plus racks of spare hose, it’s no small task! Annual hose testing makes for a long day (or two!), but it’s an important part of keeping our equipment in working order.

It’s also a great opportunity for our crews to:
🔹 Practice pulling and deploying hose lines
🔹 Thoroughly clean and inspect our equipment
🔹 Rotate and repack hose beds to help keep the hose pliable and in good condition
🔹 Identify and replace any damaged or worn hose
🔹 Make sure everything is ready for the next call

While it might not be the most exciting part of the job, it’s the work you don’t always see that helps us stay ready for the moments that matter most.

A big thank you to our crews for putting in the time and hard work to keep our equipment, and our district, ready to respond! 🚒

🔥 : How Many Firefighters Does It Take to Fight a House Fire?

Have you ever wondered why so many firefighters and fire trucks respond to a house fire?

There isn't one simple number. Every fire is different, and the resources needed depend on the size and type of building, fire conditions, whether anyone may be trapped, nearby exposures and how the incident develops.

What may surprise you is just how many different jobs need to happen—often at the same time.

🔥 Fire Attack — Firefighters advance hose lines to locate and extinguish the fire.

🔎 Search & Rescue — Crews search the building for occupants who may still be inside.

💧 Water Supply & Pump Operations — Firefighters establish a reliable water supply and keep hose lines flowing.

🪜 Ladders & Ventilation — Crews provide additional ways in and out and may remove heat and smoke from the building.

🧯 Backup & Rapid Intervention — Additional firefighters support crews operating inside and are available if a firefighter becomes trapped, lost or injured.

🚑 Medical Support — Personnel are needed to care for injured occupants or firefighters.

📋 Incident Command & Accountability — Someone must coordinate the entire operation, track firefighters and resources, monitor changing conditions and determine what needs to happen next.

And that's only part of what can be happening at a working fire.

Roberts Park staffs nine personnel across our two stations each day. A significant structure fire can quickly require more firefighters than any single fire district could reasonably staff for every possible emergency.

That's where automatic and mutual aid come in.

Our neighboring fire departments respond to assist us when we need additional personnel and equipment—and Roberts Park does the same for them. Those additional engines, trucks and ambulances aren't simply duplicating what's already there. Their crews are filling the many different roles required to safely bring an incident under control.

So when you see several fire trucks from different communities at a house fire, remember:

It takes a team to fight a fire—and that team often extends well beyond one firehouse or one fire district.
