Today, community leaders and project partners gathered to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting of River’s Edge, a new $60 million housing development near downtown Kalamazoo!

The development brings 228 new apartments to our community, including 184 affordable units for households earning at or below 60% of the Area Median Income.

Through the Homes for All Housing Millage, Kalamazoo County invested $1 million in the project, plus another $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds, helping turn plans for more housing into new places for individuals and families to call home.

River’s Edge was made possible through the efforts of developers Standard Communities and River Caddis Development with support from Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Kalamazoo County, the City of Kalamazoo and WNC & Associates and numerous additional partners and stakeholders whose contributions were instrumental in bringing the development to fruition.

As we celebrate this milestone, we're proud to support investments that expand housing opportunities and help build a stronger, more accessible community.

123 attendees. 43 organizations. One shared commitment to building more inclusive workplaces and communities.

On October 8, Kalamazoo County Government and the City of Kalamazoo partnered to host the inaugural Kalamazoo Inclusion Summit, bringing together leaders and professionals from healthcare, education, government, nonprofits, business, and higher education.

The event opened with remarks from County DEI Director Dell Darnell, City DEI Director Tanya Hewitt-Smith, City Mayor David Anderson, County Interim Administrator/Controller Terrell Cole, and City Manager Malcom Hankins followed by a keynote from Christopher “CJ” Gross, author of What’s Your ZIP Code Story?, exploring how lived experiences influence leadership, communication, decision-making, and workplace culture.

Panel discussions explored lived experiences, community impact, leadership, and systems change, with local leaders sharing perspectives on putting inclusion into practice. Among those contributing to the conversations were County DEI Director Dell Darnell and Economic Mobility Manager Sarah Drumm.

The Summit was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Kalamazoo County DEI Director Dell Darnell and Coordinator Mara Hazen, alongside City of Kalamazoo DEI Director Tanya Hewitt-Smith and Specialist Lal Tluangi. Their partnership brought together organizations and perspectives from across the community, creating opportunities for learning, connection, and collaboration.

Thank you to our speakers, panelists, community partners, and attendees for helping make the first Kalamazoo Inclusion Summit a success!

Our employees do a lot for Kalamazoo County, and we're proud to have an HR team that does so much for them! 💚

This week, our Human Resources team hosted Camp HR, bringing employees together to explore their benefits, connect with HR staff, and take advantage of services designed to support their health and well-being.

From on-site dental cleanings and flu shots to conversations with benefits representatives, Camp HR was all about making it easier for employees to access the resources available to them.

A big thank you to our incredible HR team for organizing this event and for the work they do year-round to support the people who serve our community!

You might not hear about them often, but the Kalamazoo County Equalization Department plays an important role in keeping property assessments fair and consistent across the County.

By reviewing local property assessments and analyzing sales data, the team helps ensure property values are assessed uniformly and meet state requirements. This work supports a fair property tax system and helps provide the funding communities rely on for schools, roads, and other essential public services.
