Heads up to Region 1 hunters—there is a new bull elk permit in HD 101-50 (North To***co) for the 2026–2027 season. This change is now in effect after being approved at the December 2025 Fish & Wildlife Commission meeting. Here’s what you need to know 👇

Only HD 101-50 permit holders can hunt antlered elk in the North To***co portion. Permit holders can hunt the rest of HD 101, but cannot hunt antlered elk in any other HD. This permit area exists for all seasons—archery, general, and heritage muzzleloader.

General license holders can hunt antlered elk in the rest of HD 101, excluding the North To***co portion.

With Montana's general hunting season approaching, FWP is reminding hunters and other recreational users of important changes to access requirements at several Block Management Areas (BMAs) in northwest Montana.

Changes for the 2026/2027 season include new permission requirements for SPP Montana LLC (SPP) lands and updated season-long permission for Flathead Ridge Ranch BMA.
SPP lands that were previously administered under a single access system have been divided into three separate BMAs for the 2026/2027 season. Each area has its own access requirements:

--SPP Ashley Lake BMA - Type 1 BMA requiring a blue season-long permission hang tag.https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/gisresources/hunting/hunteraccess/blockman/region1/maps/104_spp_ashleylake_2026.pdf

--SPP McGinnis BMA - Type 1 BMA requiring a yellow season-long permission hang tag.https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/gisresources/hunting/hunteraccess/blockman/region1/maps/105_spp_mcginnis_2026.pdf

--SPP North BMA - Type 2 BMA requiring written permission. Permission must be obtained in person at WPR Ranch Headquarters, 15337 Wolf Creek Rd., Libby, MT. during the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Permission must be displayed in vehicle while accessing the BMA.https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/gisresources/hunting/hunteraccess/blockman/region1/maps/100_sppmt_north_2026.pdf
When obtaining permission at the Ranch, please bring a list of the make, model, and license plate numbers of each vehicle you intend to use while accessing the BMA.

Flathead Ridge Ranch BMA requires an orange season-long permission hang tag, effective September 1, 2026. The previous season’s permission is no longer valid.https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/gisresources/hunting/hunteraccess/blockman/region1/maps/102_frr_2026.pdf

Season-long permission hang tags for SPP Ashley Lake, SPP McGinnis, and Flathead Ridge Ranch are available at designated BMA sign-in boxes or the FWP Region 1 headquarters in Kalispell. Users must obtain the correct hang tag for each BMA and display it from their vehicle's rearview mirror while accessing the property.

Updated BMA maps and rules are available on the FWP Block Management Website: https://fwp.mt.gov/hunt/access/blockmanagement
