Welcome to Montana Mondays, our weekly series dedicated to uncovering the rich and rugged history of Montana!

In 1917, the demand for copper rose greatly, both to support the war effort and to expand electricity domestically. The Granite Mountain Mine in Butte was one of many mines that operated around the clock to meet this demand. On June 8, 1917, 410 miners were lowered into Granite Mountain for their usual night shift. Before the night was over, 168 miners had lost their lives.
The Granite Mountain-Speculator disaster remains one of the most tragic mining incidents in U.S. history.

Earlier that day, an electric cable being installed for a sprinkler system had fallen into a 2,500-foot-deep shaft, and four men were sent to inspect the damage. During their inspection, a carbide lantern accidentally ignited exposed paraffin paper insulation. The fire spread rapidly through the mine, filling the tunnels with flames and toxic smoke within minutes.

Many miners survived by following passages to other mine entrances, while others barricaded themselves in an effort to keep the smoke and heat at bay. A massive rescue and recovery effort saved more than 30 men without the loss of a single rescuer. In all, 168 miners died.

Today, a public memorial at Granite Mountain honors the heroes and lives lost in the disaster. Dedicated in 1996, the memorial offers panoramic views of the Highland Mountains, the Continental Divide, and the remnants of Butte's once-prosperous mining industry. Plaques recount the people, events, and uncertain times surrounding the tragic fire.

Every month, the Flathead Quilters' Guild displays a stunning new quilt in the Kalispell Library. This month's whimsical piece, "Midnight Garden," was made and quilted by Cathy Calloway. The concept was to make a scappy garden of flower blocks with dark backgrounds. She added a few forest friends and set it under a starry sky. We think it is pure magic.

Come see for yourself! This piece is on display through October.
