I have heard some new questions and concerns about the sales tax questions on the ballot. Here’s my part 2 to answer those questions.

“As far as public works projects, $8 million per year equates to 19 lane miles of pavement every year. Or, 27 miles of alleyway, or two or three bridge replacements.

As far as parks, the new sales tax would triple the current budget for capital improvement projects.

Community center repairs and improvements are one option. Out of the city’s seven community centers, six are more than 50 years old and two are more than 90 years old. Improvements would cost $10 million, about an eighth of the revenue from this sales tax.

Other options include replacing and modernizing Parkwood Pool or constructing a new park in Piper.

The city could construct new trails, make sure parks are well lit and build bathrooms.

Davis hopes that if the sales tax passes, residents will no longer have to drive outside of Wyandotte County to go swimming, play basketball or find a safe playground.

“I can’t give you a timeline saying 10 years or after this sales tax sunsets, that everything’s going to be fixed,” Davis said. “What I can say is, our park system will be tremendously better, dare I say, unrecognizable. … We will have things that generations beforehand never saw and never thought we would get.”

As mail-in ballots land in mailboxes and early voting gets underway, I want to share a quick FAQ guide on the two sales tax questions at the end of your ballot.

Simply put, these two measures represent a historic opportunity for Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. They are direct investments in our people, our neighborhoods, and our future.

Here is what these initiatives make possible:
1. The health tax will empower us to deliver vital behavioral health and wrap-around services to give our unhoused neighbors a true fresh start. It can also be an avenue to support our Community Paramedic Program to reduce costly EMS calls and help our seniors access the healthcare they need.

2. Over the last six years, our Parks Department has delivered incredible progress across every corner of town—from new pickleball courts at Klamm Park and Wyandotte County Lake to upgrades at Clopperfield, Welborn Dog Park, and new basketball courts at Shawnee and Broderick Crawford Basketball Court. While we’ve made great use of grants and federal funding, our community’s needs are growing faster than our resources. A dedicated sales tax lets us keep this momentum going and dream even bigger—including a brand-new Parkwood Pool, a park out West in Piper and a new track and field at Eisenhower Park (just to name a few possibilities).

3. We’ve all seen and felt the difference on State and Parallel avenues this year, where smooth new pavement saves us money on vehicle wear and tear. But every neighborhood across KCK deserves that same level of care. Passing this sales tax gives Public Works the dedicated funding to resurface neighborhood streets, build safe sidewalks, and repair curbs community-wide.

There is a lot on the ballot this year, and I know it takes time to complete. But these final two sales tax questions will have the most immediate, positive impact on our daily lives. Consider voting yes so we can move our community forward.

Last night, we voted unanimously to put another $90,000 towards the KCK Homes for Generations Fund. This program focuses on assisting seniors (65+)/disabled residents with title issues on homes given to them by family members.
