At 22, just eight weeks after graduating from the police academy, Officer Elena Sanchez is seeing results, holding people accountable for hurting others.

It’s satisfying to see charges after she’s arrested someone for assault, and it’s come with recognition from the Kansas Citians she serves in South Patrol Division.

“When I'm at a call for service, and they say thank you, that’s great,” Sanchez said. “But when I'm just walking around, or they wave to us, I'm not used to that. They thank you for your service.”

Of El Salvadoran descent, Sanchez is proudly Hispanic and uses her Spanish, which she calls a work in progress, to communicate with community members. And that’s where she wants be – in the streets and active. The former college basketball player couldn’t see herself sitting behind a desk all day. https://kcpolice.org/media/news-releases/rookie-officer-on-the-move-and-seeing-results/

There are times when officers mus enter buildings in emergencies to search for suspects, injured people, and victims.

Our police recruits, under the careful watch of instructors, have been learning these tactics, training for these situations. These scenarios test a recruit’s critical thinking, ability to handle pressure, and courage.

The recruits will graduate in November, immediately beginning service to Kansas City.
