, Ever heard of a "revetted bank"? 🔍🚢

In this photo taken on May 27, 1909, the steam tenders Thetis, Sabrina, and Arethusa sit anchored along a freshly revetted bank of the Missouri River in Kansas City.

What was revetment work?
To prevent the river from eroding valuable farmland and rail corridors, workers wove massive mattresses out of willow brush, weighed them down with thousands of tons of rock ("riprap"), and lined the shoreline to hold the riverbank in place.

A project that transcends boundaries. 🌎

Today is ! To celebrate, we are highlighting a structure that perfectly blends local, natural materials with world-class engineering.

The Kansas City District planned, designed, and oversaw construction of Mexico’s new National School of Civil Protection, which will train professionals in disaster risk management across Mexico City, the country, and the region.

Built with lava rock from Popocatépetl, one of the most active volcanoes on the continent looming at the outskirts of the city, this state-of-the-art facility stands as a lasting symbol of preparedness and our enduring partnership with U.S. Northern Command because disasters do not stop at a line on a map.

At , newly commissioned engineer officers in the Engineer Basic Officer Leadership Course (EBOLC) are getting a masterclass in collaboration.

Capt. Leandra Ramos, serving in a dual role with the 554th Engineer Battalion and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has enhanced the curriculum by bringing civilians into the classroom.

This initiative provides a broader perspective on the vital missions of USACE, bridging the gap between military and civilian engineering worlds.

As Capt. Ramos says, "Civilians are the backbone of USACE." This collaboration ensures our future leaders understand the full spectrum of the Army's engineering capabilities.

At the Kansas City District, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible field personnel behind the completion of the Kansas City Levees raise contract and look ahead to what's next.

Even as we celebrate turning over this major milestone, we are already gearing up for the next chapter: the newly awarded contract for the stoplog closure structures at the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge. With 4 closure structures left to complete over the next two years, we are officially in the home stretch of nearly 15 years of system-wide construction.

Getting here was no small feat:
🔹 85,000+ labor hours by construction since 2021
🔹 Replacement of two critical pump stations in 2023 along with modifications to 11 others.
🔹 Working weekends, holidays, and extended overtime through record weather and challenging conditions to protect safety, quality, and schedule.

Mega projects succeed because of the dedication of the men and women wearing hard hats on the front lines. The perseverance and patience demonstrated by the members of our construction branch prove that having the right people on the job is everything.

To the operators, laborers, craftspeople, superintendents, and field engineers who refused to take “no” for an answer, gave it their all, and got the job done: THANK YOU.

Kansas City is safer and more resilient because of you.

When the storm clears, the road to recovery begins—literally.
Meet our Debris Planning and Response Team (PRT)!

Comprised of highly trained, dedicated civilian volunteers from across our district, this rapid-response unit can deploy within hours of a major disaster declaration.

Their mission? To expertly manage, monitor and coordinate the massive task of debris removal. Clearing roads is an essential first step so that emergency medical personnel, power crews and supply trucks can reach those in need.
As team member Jim Workman puts it, helping citizens get back to their day-to-day lives brings "a great sense of accomplishment."

We are immensely proud of our debris PRT volunteers who drop their normal daily tasks to help devastated communities rebuild.

Today is National Public Lands Day and there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy your favorite lake or national park.

While you’re enjoying those public lands, remember there’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes to care for them.

At Harlan County Lake in south-central Nebraska, park rangers, and natural resource specialists have taken an unconventional approach to managing noxious weeds and invasive vegetation. This spring, Harlan County Project Office staff teamed up with a local partner to put some very hungry four-legged helpers to work. Sheep and goats are now helping control unwanted vegetation, putting their iron stomachs to work instead of relying solely on herbicides.

Want to learn more about the Harlan County Goat Grazing Program and how this unique partnership is helping manage thousands of acres of federal land?
