Today was a somber day as we said goodbye to our friend and former colleague, Rich Lehmann.

Many knew of Rich as the longtime Fire Chief of the Liberty Fire Department, or as a professor at Penn Valley. But Chief Lehmann holds a special place in the history of Grandview Fire as one of the first 3 Assistant Chiefs after the position was created in the 1980’s.

Chief Lehmann’s tenure with us was short, but he helped to develop the AC’s position and paved the way for future Chief Officers of our department.

——

This afternoon, we provided Pumper 722 and its crew to represent Grandview at Chief Lehmann’s service.

And as it is in the fire service, we found many friendly faces after the service.

In total, over 250 years of service to our city was represented by retired and active members.

Assistant Chief Jim Van D**e (retired)
Captain Ron High
Captain Tom Marnin (retired)
Assistant Chief Rob Stottlemeyer (retired)
Assistant Chief Jim Brown (retired)
Fire Chief Chuck Thacker (retired)
Engineer Andy Starz
Firefighter David Gully
Firefighter Ethan Seaba

Truck 8 (Kansas City) and Truck 733 (Grandview) got together this morning for joint training. Crews familiarized themselves with each other’s equipment and abilities.

They even shared donuts 100 ft up in the air. (No funny business behind these donuts, IYKYk)

We appreciate the brotherhood and training opportunities with our automatic aid partners.

The reason for retired Captain McGill’s visit to the station last week was a pretty special one.

Captain Schrick had recently been cleaning out some storage at his house when he came across a couple of retired fire jackets that once belonged to Captain McGill. Rather than let them continue sitting in storage, he knew exactly where they belonged and reached out to get them back to their rightful owner.

For those of us in the fire service, an old coat or piece of gear can carry a lot more meaning than what you see on the outside. They represent years of calls, long shifts, friendships, memories, and service to a community.

Captain McGill was extremely grateful to have them back.

It was great having Captain McGill back at the station and even better seeing a small piece of Grandview Fire history make its way home.

Retired Fire Captain Paul McGill stopped by Station 2 this morning. Before he left, he asked to take a picture with the Line Gun. Captain McGill would often test-fire this tool to check its readiness (we believe he just loved shooting it 😂)

Paul served our city for 42 years. He was a foundational pillar of our department and a true Firemen.

Continue to enjoy retirement, Paul!
