On February 26, 1918, two Kansas City Fire Department delegates Fred Baer and William Gardner, traveled to Washington, D.C. for the convention where the International Association of Fire Fighters was born. They carried the names of 373 KCFD personnel with them. Those 373 became original charter members of the IAFF, and in the lottery that followed, we were given Local 42.

One hundred and eight years later, that charter still means the same thing: firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers and support staff standing together for fair wages, real benefits and safe working conditions.

Today we also remember the brothers and sisters who never came home.

From all of us at IAFF Local 42, Happy Labor Day.

Kansas City, our boots are out again.

Members of IAFF Local 42 are hitting the streets for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot campaign. A tradition our Union started back in 1954 when fire fighters adopted MDA as our charity of choice. Since then, members have raised more than $720 million to fund research, MDA Care Centers, summer camp for kids at no cost to their families, and advocacy for people living with ALS, muscular dystrophy, and 300+ related neuromuscular diseases
This fight is personal for us. MDA and the IAFF are now working together to understand why fire fighters face a higher risk of developing ALS — so every dollar in that boot goes toward our families too.

See a Local 42 boot? Drop in what you can. Every dollar counts.
