Turner Elementary Cubs Turner Elementary News and Updates We also serve students living in the Creekside and Greymoor areas.

Turner Elementary School is located in the heart of the Turner school district between Turner High School and Turner Middle School with approximate boundaries of 47th Street on the East, 59th Street on the West, Douglas Avenue on the South, and Kansas Avenue on the North. As of the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, Turner Elementary serves approximately 590 students, grades PK through five. Our campus is adjacent to Pierson Park and is the former Pierson Junior High School. When the new Turner High School was opened and the former Turner High building became Turner Middle School, the Pierson campus was remodeled for elementary students, and we relocated from the former Turner Grade campus that is now recognized as the Turner Recreation Center. With a full contingent of highly professional certified and classified staff, Turner Elementary staff are working together to ensure our students get the best educational opportunities available. Turner Elementary School is a great place to learn and to grow.

🎶🌈 The Coat of Many Colors! 🌈🎶
Our 5th graders celebrated Dolly Parton while building their reading, writing, and comprehension skills! Students explored Dolly’s life of music and giving, learned the meaningful story behind her Coat of Many Colors, and identified the problems she faced and how she overcame them.
Through reading, writing, music, designing, and reflection, students discovered an important lesson: We all have different stories, and those differences are what make each of us unique and beautiful! 💕

🎪🍎🥪 NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK! 🥪🍎🎪

This week, we celebrated National School Lunch Week, and we want to give a HUGE shoutout to our wonderful OPAA cafeteria staff who work hard every day to keep our Cubs bellies full and their brains ready to learn! 💙💛🐻

Our amazing cafeteria team made lunchtime EXTRA fun this week with a carnival-themed menu featuring some exciting new lunch options! 🎡🍿🎟️ Our Cubs got to enjoy Carnival Crunch Chicken Bites with Funnel Cake, Under the Big Top Walking Tacos, and Strongman Meatball Subs! 🎪🌮🍗

We are so thankful for the time, energy, and love our OPAA staff put into preparing delicious meals and making lunchtime something our students look forward to each day. Your hard work, warm smiles, and dedication do not go unnoticed!

🪨🌎 ROCKING OUR WAY THROUGH SCIENCE! 🔬 What causes rocks to break? Our 4th graders are on a mission to find out!

In Module 1 of PhD Science, students are exploring Earth's Features and investigating the question: How did the Grand Canyon's features form?

Using shaving cream to represent rock and straws to model moving air, students investigated how different forces can change Earth's surface. They discovered that moving air created holes in the shaving cream, and the stronger the force, the bigger the holes became! 💨Our young scientists are learning how forces can shape and change Earth's features over time, one experiment at a time! 🧪🏜️

🎨🇲🇽 Our 2nd and 5th grade Cubs celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about Alebrijes, colorful Mexican folk-art figures inspired by imaginative combinations of animals! 🦁🦋🐍

After learning about these unique creations, students put their own creativity to work and designed their very own alebrijes! 🌈✨ We loved seeing their colorful and one-of-a-kind ideas come to life! 💙💛

✏️📚 Third graders are putting their writing skills to work!

Students in Ms. Kobza’s class are hard at work writing a 3-paragraph literary analysis essay! Students used key details from their anchor text, "Anansi and the Birds" to explain how Anansi’s actions led him to learn an important lesson. To wrap up their analysis, students also identified and explained the theme of the story.

Our new curriculum includes a writing project at the end of each unit that takes students through the full writing process: planning, drafting, peer revision, and final publishing. 📝✨

This is a big challenge and change for our students, and we are so proud of the hard work, thinking, and perseverance they are showing! We can’t wait to see how their writing grows throughout the year! 🌟📖
