Illegal dumping isn’t a victimless crime. Every mattress, tire, couch, and pile of debris dumped on public property takes money away from the services and infrastructure our community depends on.
At KCKES, infrastructure projects often become more expensive when crews encounter illegally dumped debris, vandalism, or damage to equipment and facilities.
To help address these challenges, we’re partnering with LiveView Technologies (LVT), which is providing two mobile security units at no cost as part of a demonstration. These units have been deployed at active project locations where we’ve experienced illegal dumping, vandalism, and property damage.
LVT’s rapidly deployable technology provides remote monitoring and can support public infrastructure projects, parks, government facilities, and other critical assets. The goal is simple: protect public investments, improve site security, and keep ratepayer dollars focused on improving infrastructure, not cleaning up preventable damage.
If you witness illegal dumping, please report it through 311, the myWyco app, or 911 if there is an immediate public safety concern.

We never like to lose great team members, but we are incredibly grateful for the more than 30 years of service Cam Butler has dedicated to our utility and community.
As Cam begins his next chapter, we’re excited that he’ll continue using his skills as a certified electrician and serving our community.
Cam has been a mentor to many of our team members, setting the standard for integrity, hard work, professionalism, and what it means to be a public servant.
While he will certainly be missed, we are excited for Cam and wish him nothing but success in this next chapter. Thank you for 30+ years of service and for the impact you’ve made on so many people along the way.

Future public servants in the making! 👷♂️🚛💧
This week, students from the Argentine Betterment Corporation Summer Youth Program, along with participants from Armourdale Renewal Association and Rosedale Development Association, visited Public Works to learn about career opportunities and the essential services that keep Wyandotte County moving.
Students toured Environmental Services, Streets, Fleet, Engineering, and Administration, getting a firsthand look at the people, equipment, and infrastructure that support our community every day.
Thank you to these outstanding young leaders for spending the day with us. We hope to see some of you wearing a Public Works badge in the future!

In the early 1960s, community leaders recognized declining water quality in our rivers and streams and made a bold decision to invest in wastewater infrastructure. Their goal was simple but important: protect the health of our community and protect the environment for future generations.
That vision led to the creation of the Water Pollution Control Department in 1961 and the opening of Plant No. 1 at Kaw Point in 1968.
Without those investments, Kansas City, Kansas would not look the way it does today. Sometimes it’s worth looking back and appreciating the leaders who chose to invest in the future. 💧

🏆 Kaw Point Wastewater Treatment Plant has once again earned NACWA Platinum Award recognition for permit compliance excellence.
Built in 1968, Kaw Point continues to perform at the highest levels of environmental compliance more than 55 years.
Kaw Point’s NACWA compliance journey began with a Silver Award in 2015, followed by four consecutive Gold Awards from 2016 through 2019, each recognizing a full year with no permit violations. In 2020, Kaw Point earned its first Platinum Award, a recognition reserved for facilities that achieve five consecutive years of 100% permit compliance.
Since then, the team has maintained that level of excellence, earning Platinum recognition for six consecutive years (2020–2025). Combined with its Gold Award years, Kaw Point has now achieved 10 consecutive years of NACWA award-winning permit compliance performance.
This achievement reflects the dedication, knowledge, and professionalism of the operators, maintenance staff, laboratory personnel, and support teams who keep this facility running 24/7/365 while protecting public health and the environment.
Congratulations to the entire Kaw Point team on this remarkable accomplishment. 💧🏆

Out of sight, but never out of mind. 💧
These photos show another major wastewater infrastructure upgrade completed by our Project Management team, including a brand-new manhole structure along with a new composite manhole lid and housing designed for long-term durability and safety.
Kansas City, Kansas has more than 40,000 manholes throughout the wastewater system, all requiring routine inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, and eventual replacement as part of their infrastructure lifecycle. Collection crews routinely inspect these structures and rate their condition, while Asset Management maintains and tracks the complete inventory of system assets. Our Public Works Engineering team takes a data-driven approach to prioritizing repairs and replacements, with UG Purchasing supporting competitive procurement procedures and Project Management leading projects from planning through completion.
Depending on the size, safety considerations, quantity of repairs, workloads, and overall project needs, work may be completed by in-house crews or contracted out. Additional coordination also takes place with other underground utility providers to maximize repair opportunities and minimize impacts to the community whenever possible.
These upgrades are not only critical to maintaining uninterrupted wastewater service to hundreds of homes and businesses, they also help protect roads, neighborhoods, waterways, and public health every single day.
A portion of your monthly wastewater fees helps fund these underground community assets, including pipes, manholes, pump stations, and treatment infrastructure that most people never see, but rely on 24/7.
