This weekend, we recognized World Mental Health Day, a reminder that mental health is an important part of overall well-being.

Literacy is about more than reading and writing. It’s about building confidence, creating opportunities, and feeling empowered to navigate everyday life.

Research has found a meaningful connection between literacy and mental health, with 17 of 19 studies in a global review identifying a significant association between literacy abilities and mental health outcomes.

At Literacy KC, we believe everyone deserves the skills and support to move forward with confidence. By helping adults strengthen their literacy skills, we’re working toward a community where more people can access opportunities, build independence, and reach their goals.

As we reflect on World Mental Health Day, we’re proud to be part of work that supports both the skills and well-being people need to thrive.

Adult education is workforce development.

Reading, writing, math, digital literacy and English language skills all play a role in helping adults succeed at work. Adult education also helps learners earn high school equivalency credentials and prepare for further education, training and employment.

When adults have the skills they need to move forward, employers gain a stronger workforce and communities benefit from greater opportunity.

At Literacy KC, we see every day what happens when adults have access to education and the support they need to reach their goals. Investing in adult education means investing in people, our workforce and the future of our communities.

We’re celebrating a great week of progress at Literacy KC!

Ten students completed Excel Essentials and earned their Northstar Digital Literacy certifications, building skills they can use in the classroom, at work and beyond. We also enjoyed time with our Conversation Club this week, giving students the opportunity to practice their English and connect with one another.

We’re proud to celebrate these milestones and the continued progress happening in our classrooms.

Last week, Literacy KC’s Netty Doyle and Dr. Wendy Kline joined adult education advocates from across the country in Washington, DC, for NAFTAE's Flood the Hill.

The National Association for the Transformation of Adult Education brings together educators, learners and partners to elevate adult education at the national level. During Flood the Hill, Netty and Wendy met with congressional representatives to share the impact of adult education and the role it plays in strengthening communities and the workforce.

We’re proud to have Literacy KC represented in these conversations and grateful to Netty and Wendy for bringing the Kansas City perspective to the table.

As we wrap up National Literacy Month, we’re looking back at a busy September at Literacy KC.

The Literacy KC Classic was a major highlight, bringing our community together for a day of mini golf and support for adult education. We also hosted multiple hiring fairs, giving students opportunities to connect with employers, while classes picked up for the fall and students continued making progress toward their goals. Volunteer groups also spent time supporting our students and helping behind the scenes.

Thank you to everyone who was part of September at Literacy KC. We’re looking forward to what’s ahead this fall.

This fall, Literacy KC students could once again borrow Google Chromebooks for the school year through our partnership with Kansas City Public Library. We distributed more than 100 computers to students at our Park 39 and Clymer Community Center locations.

Having access to a computer helps students stay connected to their classes, complete lessons, search for employment, and, build the digital skills they need to pursue their goals. Thank you to Kansas City Public Library for helping make this possible!
