The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS Commission recently unanimously approved the first ever Community Benefits Ordinance ("CBO") brought forward by Commissioner Andrew Davis for UG and me. This legislation makes good on the promise made decades ago that development on the West side of Kansas City, Kansas would be leveraged in order to improve all areas of KCK, specifically East of I-635.
It is the first piece of legislation that comes from the Business & Economic Development Taskforce that I chair. This Task Force is one of seven Task Forces created by Mayor Tyrone Garner to bring forth legislations and programming that would be of benefit to the community at-large.
This is a first step to systemically & tangibly provide funding for projects that otherwise might never see the light of day due to the lack of capacity of urban developers. It has been a pleasure partnering with Commissioner Davis in creating the legislation. Thank you to our colleagues on the Commission along with John Rios Irene Caudillo and Greg Kindle for working with us to bring this important ordinance into fruition.

“We proudly tout the fact that we are one of most diverse communities across this nation — the demographics speak to that — but to date we have not dignified all of our citizens to properly identify themselves,” said Commissioner Harold Johnson, who represents District 4. “This is not an effort to become a sanctuary city. This is a means of identifying and protecting the safety and welfare of all of our citizens, regardless if they are undocumented or not.”

Our movement has been working to raise community awareness and support for years. Local officials have been invited to meet and engage throughout that time.
This is not new. It is not a secret. There are no surprises. Only persistence.
Wyandotte is tired of waiting. Vote to pass the Safe and Welcoming Act tomorrow, February 10.
