🚒 Learning the tools. Building confidence.

Chief Moreno and Engine 5 introduced the young ladies of Camp SPARK on how to access a damaged vehicle after a major accident.

Experiences like this give campers a closer look at rescue work while encouraging teamwork, curiosity, and confidence. Thank you, Chief Moreno and Engine 5, for sharing your knowledge with the next generation! 💪🔥

🔋🔥 Why can lithium-ion batteries catch fire?

This Fire Prevention Week, Captain Breda explains: lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space. Damage, excessive heat, or improper charging can trigger thermal runaway—a chain reaction that generates more heat and can lead to fire.

⚠️ Watch for swelling, unusual heat, leaking, strange odors, or hissing sounds. Stop using a device that shows these warning signs.

🚨 If a battery is smoking or catches fire, get out, stay out, and call 911. Do not pick it up or try to move it.

Knowing the warning signs is another way to **Charge into Safety!** ⚡

🔋🔥 Small battery. Big responsibility.

From cell phones and smartwatches to headphones, toys, and e-bikes, lithium-ion batteries power many devices we use every day.

This Fire Prevention Week, HCESD 48 encourages you to Charge into Safety:

✅ Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions.
✅ Use the recommended battery and charger.
✅ Keep charging devices away from bedding and other flammable materials.
✅ Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, or unusually hot.

Know what powers your devices—and make battery safety part of your daily routine!

🔋♻️ Retire your batteries safely!

This Fire Prevention Week, Captain Breda reminds you: lithium-ion batteries do not belong in the trash or curbside recycling. They can cause fires in garbage trucks and recycling facilities.

✅ Tape the terminals of undamaged batteries with clear or electrical tape.
✅ Place each battery in a separate plastic bag.
✅ Contact a designated battery recycling location before visiting to confirm what it accepts.
