πŸš’ Today we welcomed a new generation of Katy Elementary kindergarteners for their annual fire station visit!

As part of Fire Prevention Month, the students walked across Avenue D to join us for a morning of fire safety education. We love seeing this new group of young learners carry on this special tradition each year!

Thank you to our C Shift crew for hosting and to the teachers and staff at Katy Elementary for continuing this tradition with us! ❀️

πŸš’ It’s been a busy October so far for Katy Fire Department!

From National Night Out, Target’s Grand Opening, and the Rice Harvest Festival and Parade to welcoming the Katy Chamber of Commerce, our crews have enjoyed connecting with our community!

During Fire Prevention Week, more than 75 children and their teachers visited our stations, and our firefighters visited three local preschools to share fire safety lessons.......with many more station tours and school visits scheduled for the second half of October as well!

Thank you to our firefighters and staff for their hard work, and to our community partners, teachers, and volunteers for helping make these events possible. Here are a few highlights! ❀️

πŸ”₯ Fire Prevention Week | Charge Smart. Stay Safe. πŸ”₯

Phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, power tools and other rechargeable devices have become part of our everyday lives...... and so have lithium-ion batteries.

This Fire Prevention Week, the Katy Fire Department is reminding everyone that a few simple charging habits can help prevent fires:

πŸ”Œ Use the charger and cord designed for your device.
πŸ“± Charge devices on a hard, flat surface - never on a bed, couch or under a pillow. (tell the kids!)
⚠️ Stop using batteries or chargers that are damaged, unusually hot, swollen or have an unusual odor.
πŸ”‹ Unplug devices once they are fully charged and avoid overloading outlets or power strips.

From cell phones to larger rechargeable devices, charge smart, stay alert and help prevent fires before they start.

πŸ”₯ BURN BAN REMINDER πŸ”₯

The Katy Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind residents that burn bans are currently in effect in Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties.

Because the City of Katy extends into all three counties, burn ban orders issued by each county apply to City of Katy residents located within that respective county.

Please stay fire aware, follow all burn restrictions, and help us keep our community and neighbors safe.

πŸš— National Child Passenger Safety Week | September 20–26

The Katy Fire Department joins safety organizations across the country in recognizing National Child Passenger Safety Week and reminding parents and caregivers that keeping our youngest passengers safe starts with the right seat, installed and used correctly ...... every ride, every time.

As children grow, their car seat and booster seat needs change. Always follow the height and weight limits provided by the car seat manufacturer, read your vehicle owner’s manual, and make sure children remain properly restrained for their age and size.

A few important reminders:
β€’ Keep children rear-facing as long as their car seat allows.
β€’ Use the top tether with forward-facing car seats when required.
β€’ Don’t rush the move from a booster to a seat belt.
β€’ Children should ride in the back seat through age 12.
β€’ Register your car seat with the manufacturer so you’ll be notified of recalls.

Need help choosing the right seat or checking your installation? NHTSA offers a Car Seat Finder, installation guidance, recall information, and a searchable directory of certified Child Passenger Safety inspection locations.

The right seat. The right fit. Every trip. ❀️

During National Preparedness Month, we have talked about making decisions before an emergency and knowing what your household may need.

Another part of preparedness is knowing where you will get information when something is happening.

Emergencies can develop quickly. Weather changes. Roads close. Conditions shift. Instructions may change as more information becomes available.

When that happens, the time to figure out where to look for reliable information is not after the emergency has already started.

Make sure your household has more than one way to receive important information:

β€’ Sign up for local emergency alerts.
β€’ Keep emergency notifications enabled on your phone.
β€’ Follow trusted local and official sources.
β€’ Know where you will get weather information.
β€’ Consider how you would receive information if power, internet, or cellular service were disrupted.

Here in our area, there are several local alert systems worth knowing:

City of Katy - KTALERT
Sign up: https://bit.ly/KTALERT

Harris County - ReadyHarris Alerts
Sign up: https://member.everbridge.net/453003085616997/login

Fort Bend County - FBC Alert
Sign up: https://member.everbridge.net/892807736729064/new

Waller County - CodeRED
Sign up: https://accountportal.onsolve.net/wallercountytx

KTALERT is the City of Katy's mass notification system, while each of the three counties serving our area maintains its own alerting system. Depending on where you live, work, go to school, or spend time, consider which systems are relevant to you.

Social media can be useful, but it should not be your only source. Apps can stop working. Phones can lose power. Internet and cellular service can be interrupted.

Preparedness means thinking about those gaps ahead of time and building some redundancy into how you receive information.

It also means knowing which sources you trust before information starts moving quickly.

Good information gives you more time to make good decisions. Know where you will get it before you need it.
