Monday night’s Gibbon City Council meeting was a special one as Captain Robert “Bob” Anderson was recognized for his upcoming retirement and an incredible 47 years of service in law enforcement.

For the past 32 years, Captain Bob has been a familiar face at Gibbon City Council meetings, serving as the liaison between the City of Gibbon and the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office since the City began contracting with BCSO for law enforcement services.

In recognition of his years of service and dedication to the Gibbon community, Captain Bob was presented with a commemorative plaque and a key to the City of Gibbon!
We appreciate the City of Gibbon for taking the time to recognize Captain Bob and the many years he has spent serving its residents.

Captain Bob’s last day with BCSO will be October 30, bringing an extraordinary 47-year law enforcement career to a close.
Stay tuned next week as we share some special posts celebrating Captain Bob, his career, and the lasting impact he has made on the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and the communities we serve.

Congratulations, Captain Bob!

Things got a little competitive last night at Kearney’s Pizza Ranch!

Officers from the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Kearney Police Department, University of Nebraska at Kearney Police Department, and Nebraska State Patrol came together for a wing-eating contest, all while raising money for the Pink Patch Project!

Thanks to a portion of sales donated by Pizza Ranch and tips generously donated by officers who served customers throughout the evening, $418 was raised for the Pink Patch Project!

And we're happy to report that BCSO is bringing home the bragging rights this year!

🥇 1st Place: Community Service Officer Jonathan Baughman

🥈 2nd Place: Chief Deputy Dan Schleusener

Apparently, our guys take their wings pretty seriously!

A big thank-you to Pizza Ranch for hosting, our fellow law enforcement agencies for joining in the fun, and everyone who came out to eat, donate, and support a great cause!

Teen Driver Safety Week | October 18–24

Handing your teen the car keys is a big milestone. Making sure they're prepared for the responsibility starts long before that first solo drive.

During National Teen Driver Safety Week, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office is reminding parents and guardians that your involvement makes a difference.

A few simple ways to help your teen become a safer driver:

✅ Set clear expectations. Talk about speed limits, passengers, seat belts, and putting the phone away.

✅ Lead by example. Your teen notices how you drive, even when you don't realize it.

✅ Practice together. Time behind the wheel with an experienced adult helps build confidence and good habits.

✅ Know the rules. Familiarize yourself with Nebraska's teen driving restrictions and consider enrolling your teen in driver's education.

The conversations you have today can influence the decisions your teen makes when you're not in the passenger seat.

BCSO History | Sheriff D.E. Wort
Continuing our look back at the men who have served as Sheriff of Buffalo County, we come to D.E. Wort.

Wort was born in Canada in 1861 and later made his way to Buffalo County. Before becoming sheriff, he served as a deputy under former Buffalo County Sheriff Peter F.H. Schars.

Wort served as Buffalo County Sheriff from 1896 to 1897.

After leaving office, he became involved in several business ventures. Wort and his brother operated an elevator in Pleasanton and later became part of Kearney’s early automobile industry, selling Ford and Maxwell automobiles.

His public service also continued long after his time with the Sheriff’s Office. Wort was elected Mayor of Kearney three times, serving following elections in 1921, 1929 and 1937.

Today, Wort is buried at Kearney Cemetery in an impressive family mausoleum that still stands as a lasting reminder of one of Buffalo County’s early sheriffs and civic leaders.
