LOCK IT. SECURE IT. PROTECT IT.

The Kearney Police Department has seen an increase in thefts from motor vehicles recently, with stolen items including fi****ms.

While our Uniform Patrol Bureau has increased its presence in areas experiencing the highest number of incidents and two suspects were taken into custody this week, there may be additional offenders. These types of thefts are often preventable, and a few simple precautions can make a big difference.

Please take the following steps to protect your property:
Lock your vehicle every time, even when parked in your driveway.
Never leave fi****ms or other valuables inside your vehicle.
Close and secure your garage doors.

The Kearney Police Department asks the public to report anyone seen checking vehicle doors in parking lots or residential areas, or engaging in other suspicious activity. Call our non-emergency line at (308) 237-2104 or call 911 to report a crime in progress.

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at approximately 10:50 p.m., Kearney Police Department officers
were dispatched to 1013 W. 3rd Street in Kearney regarding a domestic assault.

When officers arrived, the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old James Hughes of Kearney, fled
on foot into a nearby heavily wooded area in an attempt to evade law enforcement. Hughes was
known to be armed with a handgun and a knife, creating additional safety concerns for officers and
the surrounding community.

KPD officers immediately established a perimeter and began an organized search of the area.
Additional specialized resources, including the KPD/BCSO Emergency Service Unit (ESU), crisis
negotiators, K9 and drone teams, were deployed.

During the operation, crisis negotiators
established contact with Hughes and worked to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
Through coordinated efforts and communication, Hughes ultimately surrendered peacefully and
was taken into custody without further incident.

Hughes faces the following charges:
• Domestic Assault – 1st Degree (Felony)
• Assault by Strangulation (Felony)
• Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (Felony)
• Terroristic Threats (Felony)
• Cruelty to an Animal (Felony)
• Criminal Mischief (Misdemeanor)

“This incident highlights the importance of coordinated training, effective communication, and
having specialized resources available when situations present an increased risk to officers and
the community. When an armed individual attempts to evade law enforcement in an area that
presents additional challenges, officers must work together, establish control, and use the
resources available to resolve the situation as safely as possible.”- Chief Kowalek

The Kearney Police Department appreciates the assistance and partnership of the Buffalo County
Sheriff's Office, UNK Police Department and Nebraska State Patrol. The ability of our agencies to
work together during a complex situation is an important part of protecting our community.

Anyone who may have information relevant to this case is encouraged to contact Sergeant Benson
at the Kearney Police Department at (308) 237-2104, Buffalo County Crimestoppers at (308) 237-
3424, or by using the See Something Send Something App.

As with all criminal charges, the allegations against Mr. Hughes is presumed innocent unless and
until proven guilty.

Investing in Leadership!

This week, Officer Dostal and School Resource Officer Dennis attended the three-day First-Line Leadership training program, designed to support current and aspiring leaders.

The training focused on leadership, effective communication, emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making, teamwork, and understanding what motivates others.

By strengthening these skills, our officers gain valuable tools to make informed decisions, support their teams, and continue working toward excellence in serving our community.

At KPD, we believe strong leadership starts with a commitment to learning, growing, and leading by example!
