🍂 WALK/ROLL WITH A COP! 👮‍♂️🚶‍♂️

Five schools, tons of students, and A LOT of steps later… our officers might need a new pair of walking shoes!

The Kearny Police Department had a great time participating in this year’s Walk/Roll with a Cop events!

Throughout the week, our officers joined students, families, and school staff for some fresh air, exercise, plenty of laughs, and a fun start to the school day!

But these events are about more than just getting our steps in! They’re an opportunity for our officers to connect with the children in our community, build trust, promote pedestrian safety, and create positive interactions that extend beyond the classroom.

While our legs may be tired, events like these are always worth the extra steps!

A big thank you to the Kearny Board of Education, our participating schools, and everyone who came out to make these mornings special!

📸🎥 Here are just a few of the moments we managed to capture along the way! Between all the walking, talking, laughing, and interacting with students, we were a little too busy making memories to photograph them all!

Update: 1:43 PM. The area shelter in place is lifted. There will continue to be a police presence in the area as an investigation is still on going.

At approximately 9:16 a.m., Kearny Police units were dispatched to a residence on Webster Avenue, following a 911 caller’s report of shots fired. As officers took positions near the residence, an additional gunshot was heard. No persons or officers were injured. Units secured the area, established a perimeter and initiated negotiations with the suspect. After a period of time, Mr. Thomas J. Romano, 57, of Kearny, who was the subject of an unrelated arrest warrant, surrendered to police.

As of this time, the perimeter remains in place and the investigation is ongoing. Residents are advised that there is currently no active shooter or threat to the general public. However, everyone is asked to avoid the area of Webster Avenue near West Bennett Avenue until the incident has concluded. The Kearny Police Department extends its gratitude to the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team and all assisting agencies for their prompt response.

📚🚔 BACK TO SCHOOL! 🎒✏️

Today marks the first day of a brand-new school year, and the Community Policing Unit is excited to welcome our students, teachers, staff, and families back to school!

Throughout the year, you’ll see our team in and around our schools, working to keep our students safe while continuing to build positive relationships with the young people in our community.

Our Community Policing Unit includes our High School School Resource Officer (Officer Miranda), Middle School School Resource Officer (Officer Aquino), Unit Sergeant (Sgt. Grimm), Special Law Enforcement Officer assigned to the High School (Officer Perez), and our L.E.A.D. Instructor (Officer Brady) who brings the Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence program to every 5th-grade classroom across the district, while also leading school assemblies and presentations, supporting community programs, and serving as the unit’s resident “jack of all trades.”

Whether we’re in the classroom, walking the halls, helping at arrival and dismissal, giving a presentation, attending a school event, or simply stopping by to say hello, our goal remains the same: to be a familiar, approachable, and positive presence for our students.

As everyone settles back into their routines, please remember to slow down around our schools, watch for children crossing, obey crossing guards and posted signs, and give yourself a little extra time during arrival and dismissal.

From all of us in the Kearny Police Department, we wish our students, educators, staff, and families a safe, healthy, successful, and memorable 2026–2027 school year!

We’ll see you around the schools! 👋🚔📚
