Fire inspections are an important part of keeping our community, schools, and businesses safe. Here are five common fire code violations to be aware of to help your business or organization prepare for an inspection.
1. Missing or Improper Address Identification - Make sure your building address, including suite or unit numbers, is clearly visible from the street and contrasts with its background. Larger buildings set back from the street may need additional signage.
2. Blocked Exits and Exit Paths -Keep exits, stairways, and fire escapes clear of obstructions and combustible materials. Never store items under open stairways or block exit routes with merchandise or other items.
3. Missing or Unlit EXIT Signs - Clearly mark required exits with visible EXIT signs. Keep illuminated signs fully lit whenever the building is occupied, and check emergency lighting regularly to ensure it works when needed.
4. Propped-Open Fire Doors - Keep fire doors functioning properly, with self-closing and latching devices in working order. Remove wedges and doorstops that prevent doors from closing. Fire doors help slow the spread of fire and smoke.
5. Improper Use of Extension Cords - Avoid using extension cords as permanent wiring or overloading electrical outlets. Use cords only for temporary needs, and choose approved power strips with built-in circuit breaker protection when needed.
