Thank you Portland Press Herald and Kennebunk-Wells Now for sharing our new access trail at Alewive Woods!

EDIT: The article says the bridge at the halfway point was built by a volunteers. While volunteers helped in some very important ways, the bridge mastermind and main builder was Mike Cooper and his business Caribou Recreation Development in Kennebunk!

These trails in southern and Midcoast Maine were built with nature lovers with mobility limitations in mind.

🌿 New Land Acquisition: Welcome to Blythe Wood! 🌿

We’re excited to announce that 26 acres in the Ward Brook watershed are now permanently protected, thanks to a generous land gift from Mary Margaret Ney.

Named Blythe Wood, the property includes beautiful wetlands along Ward Brook and expands the network of conserved lands KLT protects between Alewive and Alfred Roads. Protecting connected lands is important for wildlife, healthy watersheds, and allowing animals to move freely between the habitats they need to live out their full life cycles.

For now, Blythe Wood will remain protected for conservation purposes while KLT assesses the property, terrain, and options for safe future access and potential trails.

A huge thank you to Mary Margaret Ney and the Ney family for this extraordinary gift, and to everyone who helped make this conservation project possible. 💚

Welcome to the KLT family, Blythe Wood!

🍃📚 Tales on the Trails at Tributary Preserve!

A new story is waiting to be discovered at Kennebunk Land Trust’s Tributary Preserve, at the end of Drala Drive. Park in the lot and look for the information kiosk to get started!

This season’s featured book is “Thanks to the Animals” by Allen J. Sockabasin, a Passamaquoddy author dedicated to teaching and preserving the Passamaquoddy language.

🦫🦅 When baby Zoo Sap is alone and frightened in the forest, animals from beaver to the great bald eagle come together to protect and shelter him until his father returns.

Experience the story one page at a time! Walk the trail, explore the natural world, and discover a beautifully illustrated children’s book while learning about Indigenous cultures, storytelling, and relationships with the land.

Part of the regional Indigenous Tales on the Trails project with seven parting land trusts, this story invites families to explore the outdoors, enjoy a book one page at a time, and connect with Indigenous voices, cultures, and relationships with the land.

Thanks to the Animals is part of Indigenous Tales on the Trails, a regional collaboration among seven Southern Maine conservation organizations: York Land Trust, Kennebunk Land Trust, Great Works Regional Land Trust, Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Kittery Land Trust, Wells Reserve at Laudholm, and Arundel Conservation Trust. Find a different story at each organization! Year round, a new story each season.

🌿 Come walk, read, and discover with us!

🌿 Looking Ahead 🌿

We’re excited to share that Kennebunk Land Trust has officially adopted our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan!

This plan is an important step forward for KLT. Developed through community input, conversations, and careful reflection on where we are and where we want to go, it gives us a clear roadmap for the next five years.

At the heart of the plan is our NEW mission statement, ..."To conserve and care for land and water so nature and community can thrive together."

Over the next five years, we’ll be focusing generally on four key areas:

🌱 Conservation — protecting the lands and waters that make our region special
🥾 Stewardship — caring for the places we already protect
🤝 Community — building deeper connections and creating more opportunities for people to engage with KLT
🌿 Longevity — strengthening KLT so we can continue this work for generations to come

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who shared their ideas, experiences, and hopes for the future of KLT. This plan belongs to our whole community, and we’re excited to put it into action.

If you would like to read the plan, you can do so online at kennebunklandtrust.org/lookingahead

You can also pick up a hard copy at our office, or request one be mailed to you at [email protected]

We’ve spent more than 50 years protecting special places. Now, we’re looking ahead to the next 50.💚🌳

🌿 A New Way to Take in Alewive Pond! 🌿

There’s a new spot to pause, take a breath, and enjoy the view at Alewive Pond!

Kennebunk Land Trust is excited to share our new boardwalk and viewing platform, creating a welcoming place to stop and take in the beauty of the pond and surrounding landscape.

The project is part of our work to improve the trail experience at Alewive Preserve and make this special place more enjoyable and welcoming for more people. Whether you’re out for a quiet walk, exploring with the family, or simply looking for a beautiful place to sit and watch the water, we hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy it.

Come visit, slow down, and stay awhile. 💚
