The members of Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company send our deepest condolences to the Longwood Fire Company for their loss. Jeff was an invaluable resource to the community as fire police captain. You could always rely on him for a friendly wave while keeping us safe from traffic at emergency scenes or a constant supply of water bottles at training. He will be dearly missed. Please keep his family in your prayers.

It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of Fire Police Captain Jeff Hammaker, a dedicated volunteer and cherished friend whose commitment to his community left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He became Fire Police Captain in 2012 and was routinely one of Longwood's top responders each year.

Jeff devoted countless hours to serving his fire company and the community. As Fire Police Captain, he was a steady presence at emergency scenes, ensuring the safety of fellow responders and the public with professionalism, calmness, and unwavering dedication. His willingness to answer the call—day or night—reflected a lifetime of selfless service and commitment to protecting others. He also attended most weekly training sessions, took photographs, and assisted with traffic control at numerous public events.

While we are saddened by his passing, we are grateful for his years of service and unwavering devotion to public safety. We were honored to have him as part of our company, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Earlier today we conducted a Rope Rescue Refresher program for Kennett Regional Fire Department (Longwood Fire Company, Kennett Fire Company No. 1, Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company). Topics included patient packaging, lowering and hauling systems, several rescue scenarios, and an awareness of arborist climbing systems.

We’ve been working with this group over the past couple of years to expand their rope and water rescue skills, and we commend them for staying on top of those skills by holding structured refresher training.

Thank you for recognizing Chief Harris today. We honor his memory and are proud of his legacy.

Today, as we reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day, we pause to remember Assistant Chief Roy A. Harris from the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company who died in the Line of Duty on this date in 1982.

Chief Harris was operating and re-filling a fire engine at a fire pond on Route 82 in the Village of Unionville when he was struck by a motorist. Three other Po-Mar-Lin firefighters were also injured in the collision.

A Chester County native, Chief Harris grew up in West Grove and had served our Country in Vietnam where he suffered serious injuries in an ambush. Living next door to the Unionville firehouse, he worked at Hewlett Packard in Avondale where he was also an Assistant Fire Chief for the company’s fire brigade.

While his death was tragic, his legacy has lived on throughout Chester County. Three of his nephews have since served in various County fire service leadership positions; including two Past Fire Chiefs of the West Grove Fire Company — Chief Robert Weer, Jr. and Chief Jeff Simpson; the latter of whom also served as Past President of the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association; along with Past Chief John Weer of the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company — who is now our current Chief County Fire Marshal.

We will continue to acknowledge Chief Harris’ sacrifice, and we thank those dedicated members of his family who have continued to serve in his honor.

Happy Mother's Day!Especially to all the mom's who get us to honk the air horns for their kids in the back seat 😉🚒.
