Sunnycrest Elementary School We've created our page to be an informal, quick information source about our school district. Be respectful. Be focused. Be involved.

We welcome your participation and look forward to interacting with you here. We want the experience to be as positive as possible for all of us. So here are some simple and, we think, fair guidelines for participation.

1. We will delete personal attacks, inappropriate remarks, or profanity on our page.
2. This page is about Sunnycrest Elementary and the Federal Way school district and supporting our scholars and staff; so let’s keep the conversation focused on that. Business plugs, personal issues, and political banter all have a place on Facebook – just not on this particular page.
3. We welcome your feedback on our postings and we hope you’ll comment when something grabs your attention. We also appreciate it when you keep comments focused on the topic of the post. And if you have ideas about what you’d like to see included on our page, we would love to hear from you. We hope you’ll encourage others with a passion for education to find us and follow us here on Facebook.

Teacher Tuesday - Meet Mrs. Vallejos!

HELLO THERE!
I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, and teaching has always been a big part of my life. I come from a family of teachers, so from a young age, I knew that I wanted to become an educator. My passion for working with children began when I was 15, when I started working in early childhood education. I continued in that field until I began my first year as an elementary school teacher.

Outside of the classroom, my favorite role is being a mom. I have been married to my husband for 11 years, and together we have two wonderful children. Our 5-year-old son, Finnegan, is a kindergartener here at Sunnycrest, and our 10-month-old son, Atticus, keeps us busy and smiling at home!

When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, paddle boarding, line dancing, and spending time with my family. Some of my favorite nights are the simple ones spent together watching a good movie.

I am so excited to get to know your children, learn about what makes each of them unique, and support them as they grow. I can't wait to see all that they accomplish this year and help each of them reach their full potential!

MY EDUCATION
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix and my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University. I am currently working toward another Master’s degree in K–6 Mathematics, continuing to grow my knowledge and skills as an educator.

I believe teachers are lifelong learners. Throughout my career, I have always looked for opportunities to learn something new, try new ideas, and find better ways to support my students. My goal is to create a classroom where students feel welcomed, supported, and excited to learn each day.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work with your child this year and look forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing together!

Martes de maestros: ¡Conozcan a la Sra. Vallejos!

¡HOLA!

What we're working on Wednesday:

4th graders visited 1st graders on Friday for the first week of Buddy Classrooms. 1st graders picked a book ahead of time to read with their buddies and were excited to get to meet their buddies!

We started by buddies introducing themselves to each other, then found a place in the classroom to read with their buddies. Some 4th graders got to read to their buddies, while some 1st graders showed off their reading skills to their 4th grade buddies!

Great job, Roadrunners. We are proud of you!

¡Excelente trabajo, Roadrunners! ¡Estamos orgullosos de ustedes!

Happy October, Sunnycrest!

We moved into this month so quickly! A lot has been happening, and it has been fantastic talking to, meeting with, and getting to know so many of you this year who are new to our school or getting to know different staff and teams better. Thank you to those who are reaching out to partner with teachers and classrooms to make learning stronger. Thank you to the families who attended Coffee with the Principal and continued to share feedback with us. We hear that many of you are wanting more homework for students and our staff will continue to work on that!

This year, we have a new structure in some of our instruction for what we call “Level Up” time. Throughout the day students receive core instruction which is at grade level, but may switch classrooms for Level Up. This means that different teachers will focus on skills needed for the grade level and based on iReady Fall diagnostics, will determine which teacher a student will go to. This is less about a low, medium, high group than it is about determining what foundational skills are needed for the current units of study in ELA/SLA or Math. Want to know more information? Ask your child’s teacher!

IMPORTANT DATES COMING UP:

October 9 - No School, Teacher In Service Day
October 15 - Earthquake Drill (The Great Shakeout)
October 16 - Popcorn Friday
October 29 - Picture Day!
October 30 - Terrific Kids Assembly
Week of November 2 - Student Led Conferences
November 4-6 - PTA Book Fair

REMINDERS:

Please remind your child that candy and gum stay at home to keep our school clean and free of ants! Please also keep toys at home to prevent breakage, loss of items, or other issues. Our focus is on learning, as that is our priority each and every year!

Thank you for your partnership in making our school a great one!

Sincerely,

Kelley Schottle - Principal
Chantel Jacoway - Assistant Principal

¡Feliz octubre, Sunnycrest!

15 de octubre: Simulacro de terremoto (The Great Shakeout)

Atentamente,

Kelley Schottle - Directora
Chantel Jacoway - Subdirectora
